The new spec decoys. They are going to be ready for this year right? I didnt know.
During the first couple of weeks of season we have tons of specs and not so many Canadas.
So do u think I should put out alot of specs and a dozen or so Canada goose shells off to the side & then just reverse this idea in the late season when the Canadas are here in full numbers.
I know it all depends on what the bird #s are but this is pretty consistant every-year. But does any-1 do this??
I got a shippment of GHG decoys in the mail today (YAY)

I can tell you that the Speck decoys will be done this year. I have to defer to somebody that hunts Specks more than I do for the second question. You reasoning sounds good to me.
Thanks,

I don't think I have ever really been in the situation that you are describing. I think that some experimentation is in order. I too think that your idea sounds good but I just can't say for sure what will work. When I hunt Specks, I am mainly duck hunting and set my spread up accordingly. I am less than 10 miles from Reelfoot and never see any Canadas until the weather is bitter...see if you can't shoosh some across the river.

I agree with CC on this. I always put out at least half a dozen speck decoys when duck hunting in a field and have found this can be effective in killing them. I know the new FB Specks will make a huge difference this year. If there are good numbers of specks and no Canadas, I would just put out the specks until the Canadas show up. I know Jed and Rick Hall can give some advice on this.

I don't know how Specks behave in your part of the country, (although I was born there, I never hunted geese in Tn.). In CA, they don't decoy well early in the season, but we usually set up a distinct spread adjacent to a large snow goose spread. They mix fairly freely with snow geese as the season progresses, then late in the season we put out smaller (12-24)groups with a few snows mixed in, changing the layout daily. Honkers don't tend to mix with either out here, and have to be hunted separately. You never see them mix with snows.

I got a shippment of GHG decoys in the mail today (YAY)RNT, It sounds like you have the right idea. Early in our season, We do the same with Specks and snows. We generally dont start seeing decent numbers of snows till After Thanksgiving, So what I do is put out a nice size speck spread with afew snowgoose decoys. When I say afew, I mean from 1 to maybe 5.
This does exactly what you stated, It gives the impression that snows are just moving into the area, and that little bit of white will help and geese see my spread at farther distances.
Then you can slowly add and take away species from your spread as the migration brings in new birds.
I would surely mimic what you are seeing in your area, Put out a good number of speck decoys and a small amount of Canadas to the side with maybe afew of the canadas mixed in the edge of the specks.
Get you a good speck call as well. As you know they are very vocal and respond to calling well.
Be excited/aggressive in your calling, and use a lot of ground clucks, they eat it up.
Good luck on the specks this year, and let us know how it works.
