Waterfowl hunting in southern Saskatchewan

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to hunt waterfowl in southern Saskatchewan with out hiring a guide service? Where to go and what time to go?

Welcome to the Avery Message Board. For the most part free lancing in Saskatchewan is not that hard. Most of the locals are very friendly and helpful. Something to remember is Sunday is a no hunting day which means it is an excellent day to do some good scouting. As as when to go???? It depends. Too early and the flight wont be there yet. Too late and your froze out. You should also look into what kind of birds you want to harvest as in some areas there are light geese and cranes everywhere but no honkers. Other areas are honker city but no light geese. I would say generally the farther south you hunt the later you should go. Mid October is usually very good. There are no geese in Sask., and even if there were, I think it would be d*mn near impossiable to hunt them without a (very expensive) guide ;)

Eastern Sask typically has more Canadas, and as you go west you see more Specks. Light geese are everywhere. Specks show up first, as early as early Sept. and peak in late Sept. Light geese start in late Sept and peak generally in early Oct. With all the differnt races of Canadas you really can't go wrong, anytime. They say that late Oct is HOT for big Canadas and big Mallards. All is dependant, of course, on the weather. Hunting the fields is the excepted practice, hunting water is frowned upon. Don't overlook urban areas for Canadas. Just like "The States" they have a urban goose problem also.

Warning - Once you go you may not be able to stop, for good or for bad. In other words, I personally would truely discourge you going.

I usually tru to go the first week of October. The best thing to do is pick out the area you want to go and then get on the net and do some research. The Regina area is always a good place to start looking.
