Yesterday we had an eruption start underneath our biggest glacier. This also happened in 1998 and usually it doesn´t last long. This is not far away from one of my hunting spots so hopefully I can go there next weekend if the eruption is over. Just thought you might want to see a picture.

This one was taken in 1998 and appeared in one of our newspapers

What kind of eruption are we talking about and what causes it?
The picture is awesome and thanks for sharing!
How has the hunting been up there?

I am no volcano scientist but I will give it a shot. :D This is what is called a ash eruption. Scientists estimate that it took the fire an hour to get through the ice of the glacier to the surface. Underneath the ice is a lake which accumulates water throughout the year and usually drains itself this time of year. But this time because of this the flow of water will be more than usual and cause the rivers in the south to overflow and maybe cut through roads etc.

Hunting this autumn has been ok even though I haven´t been able to go as often as I would have liked, but the season isn´t over yet. ;)
Here is one picture from a Graylag / Duck hunt this autumn.

Thrainn,

That's sounds like a pretty good understanding of the science involved in this situation. I can remember the eruptions in the early 70's being played on the news here in the States and the subsequent articles in National Geographic. A very impressive display of geothermal dynamics. As your forefathers knew all along when they named your country, there is very little ice in Iceland.

One of these days we'll get over there to visit.

Thanks Rob.
I would be honoured to have you over for a visit anytime. I bet you could teach me a trick or two when we went hunting. ;)

Here is another picture from one of the newspapers taken this afternoon of the glacier.

That is pretty cool. How far away from your hunting shot is this? Do they limit your access to the hunting area because of this? It would be unbelievable if you could get the eruption in the background while you are hunting.

Thrainn,

Awesome pictures. I saw some video footage tonight on my news showing the eruption.

You read my mind. I have been thinking exactly the same thing from day one. Am trying to figure out if and how it could be possible to get a "hot" background in a hunting picture  . Some of the area around the glacier has been closed for safety reason by the police but I a going to see what I can do.

Rick...Right along with the caption: " I'll tell you what it means Thrain, no minimum size and screw the limit!"
