Jed,
In my experience the TR just won't do it, but it's not designed to. It will give great hunting or medium volume hails, but is not meant to be a screamer. The SMM on the other hand should give it to you if its tuned right. Is it a double or a single? If it's a double, you're not going to get much more than you can out of your TR. Have you tried using real cork instead of the rubber cork Jeff uses? That may help. I assume you are proficient on a call so I won't embarrass myself by trying to give calling instruction...haha. Good luck.

when trying to produce the hail call, I use a single reed. I may have to try a cork wedge. Thanks Chris. Anything else guys, I am willing to listen..

Jed,
Definately try the cork. In my experience with Jeff's calls, I always switch to a cork and it seems to really light up the upper range of the call. I think the cork gives a great low end on the call, but limits somewhat the upper end. I hope it works for you.

A rubber wedge or real cork will not make that kind of differance...if you cant ring it with a rubber cork...chances are you can't with a real cork.

the call may be out of tune...the TR will ring...but not a blairing massive ring.

I never had anyone show me how to do it correctly but this may help. When I got my RNT original I made all the normal duck sounds with it but never really got it to ring either. I was watching a show on the Outdoor Channel and they were doing a tour of the RNT facility. I saw that every call was hand tested and all of them were ringing. Then I knew my call could do it and I had to make it work. I started blowing in the call with a constant air flow. I didn't try to make any notes. I kept increasing the air flow and then it rang. From then on it was just learning to controll my air flow do get the sounds I wanted. I am not a contest caller, just a hunter. Some of these other guys can maybe give you different advice. It worked for me. As to using it in hunting situations, Yes I do. Not very often but when the wind gets really blowing and they do not respond to the lighter stuff, I give it a try. I got a nice Black Duck last year in MN because of a loud high pitch call that cut the wind and got its attention. I hope this helps.

Really concentrate on opening your throat. Too many times, you may try to blow soooo hard into the call to make it "ring" that your throat actually closes or "pinches". You will have to really concentrate on OPENING your throat until it becomes natural.

JEDJR,

If you are fortunate enough to have a caller in your area who can blow a good hail call, I would suggest you get them to try your call. Sometimes due to the way a call is tuned it can be difficult to blow a hail. This will at least let you know if the call is capable. I know the SMM is designed to be able to scream, but things can happen to a call that are difficult to see and could prevent a good hail call.

If someone else is able to ring the call, then at least you know it can be done. Hopefully having someone else work with you for a few minutes will be of help. Usually, when I've seen a guy trying to get a hail and he finally gets it you can almost see the light come on.

Kind of like riding a bike, it's difficult to describe in writing how to do it, but once you do it you have it for life.
