I need some input on acrylic goose calls. A buddy of mine has both the Foiles and the Grounds, but me being a poor college student I can only afford one. I was wondering which call I should buy and would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.

Both are very good calls and I personally prefer the Foiles but, the best thing that you can do is go to a show or a store that will have several of each and try them out. If that isn't a possibility then try your buddies out and go from there. Go for personal comfort and fit as either can be tuned for how you would like them to blow/sound.

Foiles all the way.

Can I throw a few others into this? Have you looked at Winglock? They make a great sounding delrin for about 60 bucks, and Heartland has an Acrylic for 65. Both sound great, and hard to beat the price.

Ryan,
Blow both of them and find out. I can tell you why I prefer a Super Mag and Troy can tell you why he prefers a Foiles but that doesnt mean jack squat unless one of those calls fits you. Good luck.

Both are great. You may also want to look into the Polycarb SuperMag. Great sounding call in the field and on stage. There are a lot of good calls out there made from a variety of different materials. If you are on a limited budget you'll need to make sure you make the right decission the first time. Go to a place where you can try a variety of calls and see what fits you the best. Foiles and Grounds both make great calls but there are a lot of other options as well.

Everyone blows a call a little different, how much air you present into the call, voice inflection used, and back pressure are all going to make the call sound different.I think TROY,BEN and BRETT gave some good advise.Try going to a store that has a wide variety of calls and try them out.You might find you like a different call than your friends.

Thanks for the input guys. I do have some experience with short reed calls. Mark, the Winglock delrin call is the best bang for the buck. I bought it a year ago and have had no problems with it, but it doesnt have the acrylic "pop" that I'm looking for. Another question that I would like to ask concerns whether or not Foiles and/or Grounds offer videos (preferably), CDs, or tapes on learning how to blow the Strait Meat Honker/ Super Mag.
Thanks again.

Yes foiles and grounds both offer tapes, zink does as well.Dave smith has a cd and shawn stahl has a tape also called honker talk. All are very good tapes but IMO shawn stahls honker talk and zinks the ancient art of paralyzing are hard to beat.

I hear what you are saying- Acrylic does pop better for sure. I tried the supermag, and I didn't care for it, but it's obviously a great call. Do what the other guys said and go somewhere where you can blow a few different ones and see. I started out with a Winglock, and I still have it, and added a Zink PowerClucker. I like them both. The Zink is about loud enough to pop an eardrum!

Both Foiles and Grounds offer video's and cd/cassettes to instruct you. I liked the Foiles video and cd's but I'll admit I'm a tad biased. There are several quality instructional aids available. I like watching/listening to several, you never know what you'll pick up from one to another or someone will explain something in a different way that makes sense to you that another might not have.

I think I have every goose calling tape/cd/video in the world but I think that overall the two that have done the most for me is Fred Zink's and Shawn Stahls's videos. Fred's is great for just starting out and Shawn's is great for going that extra step. I learned how to blow a shorty with a Zink call and video so I owe a big thanks to him for that...the geese on the other hand, well I don't think they are too happy about losing so many friends and family since I learned..LOL
