I've been fishing this pond the last few weeks and We've been catching alot of largemouth bass...the only thing in the pond...but i havnt been catching any big ones and i know there are some real big ones there...any one have any thing on what i can do to catch the big ones this time of year. The pond is pertty much full of weeds and its hard to run alot of lures threw without getting weeds everytime. I hope i dont make any one mad but...just thought i would ask as im sure many hunters are gettin ready to start fishing this spring. thanks

I am in the same vote as you. Looking for help. But what are you using to catch these bass if not lures? Thanks

I have always had my best luck catching big bass on big live bait. Big Shinners around MN works great but can be cost. I have also caught a lot of big bass on Jumbo Leaches as well. Soft plastics also work very well. Power Lizards and Power Worms from Berkley.

We've been using some spinners, but mostly soft bait worms and things like that bright and dark colors just mix it up...we've been catching a lot of fish but none over 2 lbs just wonderin if there was anything better to use this time of year.

I'm guessing you're using probably a 6" or 8" worm. Try going to something as big as 10 or 12 inch. Normally the smaller fish won't bother these larger baits so you may not catch near as many, but chances are if you do, that it will be at least a couple pounds or bigger. Red is a color this time of year that will produce strikes.
good luck

I would definately go with a weedless worm rig. When the water is cooler, fish them slow. Bring lots of spares, as they can take a beating in a day.

There is a bait from Table Rock Bait and Tackle called Chompers. It is a skirted grub. You will not catch the numbers, but you will catch some hogs. Their number is 1-800-455-0142

Hey Zach, when you are fishing for Bass in these lakes or ponds, are you fishing from a boat or shore? I have heard thats its better to be in a boat so that you are reeling back into the middle of the lake and not into the shore? whats the difference?

I might be able to help spend a couple years in the ozark region of the Red Man trail...
The fish in ponds usually spawn faster then on bigger waters, the big fish now are probably on the nest, I know ours are in pre spawn right now. During this time of the year for the most part what you are catching are the smaller male bass, female will go off feed for the majority of their time on the nest. Fish that are in pre spawn, while on the nest and just after absolutely hate lizards! Will eat them to not so much to feed but to protect their nest.
The bass will use these weeds as protection for the nest from bluegill and other fish that will prey on the eggs, the holes in the weeds at the surface will let the sun shine down on the nest thru these holes to incubate the eggs.
Texas rig the lizard with no weight flip or pitch this rig into the holes in the weeds and let it fall to the bottom, with the no weight will let if fall slow and will jsut drive them NUTS! Use atleast 14 lb line (I use 20) because the minute you set the hook that fish will bury in the weeds.
Another way is to look around for nest and flip that past the nest and pull it thru the nest as if its feeding on the eggs, alot of times depending a female bass depending on when during the spawn it is will hang off the nest and watch it from a distance. This will trigger a strike almost every time.
Just remember you are catching these bass at a time of year that is physically tough on them, so try to keep from handling the fish alot, release the fish quickly, in the same place she was caught so she can get right back on her nest.
Good Luck try this I promise you it will work!!
Travis you like the chompers, I used those alot, super deadly on small mouth but man do them things reek

I have always had my best luck with a Sluggo, rubber worm, and Gary Yamamoto lure. Purple with orange tail worm and purple yamamoto with white jig head.
