Do you guys know anything about snipe? We have loads of em here in kansas, just don't know if they're good for anything but wasting my duck shells. Do people eat them? I don't know a thing about them I just know that they sometimes catch me off guard and buzz 2 ft. from my head and scare me half to death while out in the blind. Thanks,

Mallyard

Snipe hunting is regulated under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and you should check your local regulations before you go afield. That being said, Snipe offer good table fare and excellent hunting. Check out the following link for a book on Snipe Hunting by Worth Mathewson as well as other info on his website related to your question.

Snipe are a great sport bird to shoot and like Rob mentioned good table fare as well.
A club I belonged to, a couple of years ago had a ton of them on the duck ponds, and the kids use to go and shoot limits of them for Jambalaya and Gumbo, Man, thats good eating for sure!

Snipe hunting is fun. We used to get a bunch of us together and walk the marsh like we were pheasant hunting. This was early in the Snipe season, when no duck hunters were around. Nobody hunts them so there is little competition. Great opportunity to work the dog. God only knows how many high dollar duck shells I have shot at them. The breast reminds me of dove.

We used to go snipe hunting back in high school! The girls never were very successful but it made for a GOOD TIME!! :D :D
Seriously thou I have heard of alot of guys eating them similar to a dove. There are several shorebirds that all look alike. I would make sure to look one up just too know what a true snipe is before I started bangin' on um smile.gif smile.gif
