I was just wandering if anyone uses an over/under for waterfowling. I am interested in purchasing one just for that and some occasional clay shooting in the off season. I am particulary intrigued about the Traditions Waterfowl II which comes in Max4 camo. Does anyone have any opinions or thoughts on this particular gun or any other camo o/u that are out there. Thanks for any and all opinions.

I have only used an o/u for waterfowling once. I was field hunting for geese in a corn field. I loved using the o/u in that situation and am also considering getting one for waterfowling. I can't help you much on the best brand to get.

I used to shoot one... I figured I rarely needed that third shell. Then after I got it, it seemed I needed a third shell alot.
The Ruger Red Label is a great O/U, as is anything by Browning and Beretta. Hard to go wrong if you spend the money.

I have an O/U or two and even a few SxS's but pretty much use my Semi-Auto for all things waterfowling. First is because of the conditions the gun is generally exposed to...harsh. Secondly, if you hunt out of a pit, stand-up, or hedgerow blind you should really be cognizant of trying to keep the muzzle OUTSIDE the blind when reloading(at least I think so). This is not always easily feasible based on individual blind construction and "heat of battle" reloading scenarios.

I grew up shooting double barrels. When it comes to simplicity they can't be beat. They won't jam up on you in harsh weather. Now, I shoot a pump for geese, but when I hunt ducks over the water I will always use my Browning Citori 525. It is much quicker for those faster targets. I can use the pump on the geese and get all three shots off because they are a slower target, but hunting ducks... rarely is there a clean 3rd shot.
I have heard very good things about the Traditions line. It would be a good purchase.

In the past I used one a good portion of the season. Loved hunting with it. I am actually looking for a side by side for ducks. But anyways. I personally would look at going with either ruger, browning or berretta. I have had owned the first two. I also have had a traditions field II model. I liked the way it shot. But I had problems from almost the start. A firing pin broke in the first year. And the butt warped out from the receiver. Given I am very hard on my guns, but overall I was not impressed. The waterfowl II maybe a much better gun for this purpose and I have not hand one in my hands. Good luck, shooting an o/u for waterfowl is fun.

I have a Winchester Supreme O/U I use duck hunting. I generally only use it on hunts that I am not hunting out of a blind on. ( Flooded corn etc) My "work" gun is a Beretta Extrema.

I used to use a pump but switched to an o/u last year and my shooting/hit percentage improved greatly. Rob brings up a good point that it isn't the best gun for certain blind set ups. I think the only disadvantage that I've noticed is not having a 3rd available right a way to shoot any cripples, but if you hunt with other people it's not a problem.

This is a little off topic but I had a weird thing happen this weekend. My O/U wouldn't break after firing, but it only happen with a certain type/brand of shell, I won't name the O/U brand or shell brand but has this happened to anyone else? Luckily I had different shells with me.

I own two o/u steoger condors, each gun was less than $300.00 and they have preformed flawless , the 20ga is in its 3rd season and the 12ga is 6mo old and has shot a lot of ducks and geese this year! I realy enjoy shooting them, very well built gun for the money! smile.gif
