I need some advice on which goose call to purchase. I hunt in Central Illinois and mostly hunt in agricultural fields. I am interested in buying an acrylic call from Zink. I do not have very much experience with short reed calls, but am eager to learn. I have researched the Zink website, but I want to know what call is best for a beginner like myself and is best suited for the geese in my area. Thanks for all the help.
P.S. How is the new Zink DVD?

Drake,
I'm not a professional caller my any means, but I can do my fair shair of it in the field. I used an acrylic Zink SR-1 as my starter call. I had never even blown a short reed call before. The SR-1 comes with the best instructional video on the market. Fred really teaches you the ins and outs of how to blow the SR-1. After about 3 months of watching the video a couple times per week, I was able to make all the sounds of the Canada goose pretty well. Now I use an acrylic LM-1 as well as the SR-1, and all the time I spent learning how to blow the SR-1 made blowing the LM a piece of cake. I live in southern Indiana and I think either call would work perfect for you.

Drake,
In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of the Zink calls. The SR-1 and LM-1 are the "easiest" to learn to blow in my opinion. The SR-1 comes with the instructional VHS tape, "The Ancient Art of Paralyzing". In the tape, Fred teaches the proper method of running the call. The SR-1 has a deeper, goosy, hollow sound to it, while the LM-1 is a higher pitched call. The next easiest call to run is the PC-1. It has a more constricted bore, resulting in more built-in backpressure. This allows the call to break over much easier. Fred told me the call was designed so that folks could blow it one-handed. The PM-1 has a more open bore and an un-shaved reed. This requires more air control and hand manipulation to run than the other calls. I hope this helps. If you'd like to see the calls check out our website at the link in my signature. We have all the Zink calls for sale, and are expecting the new polycarb calls any day.

Drake,
I will second that you can't go wrong with any of the Zink calls. I have blown on almost all of them and love each and every one. My lanyard consists of a PC-1 and a LM-1. They are both great sounding calls and they allow me to vary sounds on different geese. But my advice to you is to go to a local Zink dealer and blow them for yourself, and find out which one fits you best. Even if you are a first time caller, with practice it won't take long for you to get the hang of it.

I just switched to short reeds this year and with and SR-1 and Fred's paralyzing video you will have NO problems. I hunt northern IL and the SR-1 works awesome for me. I also just purchased a GK Giant Slayer, but it isn't nearly as easy to use as my SR-1.
Good Luck,

Get the SR-1 and you'll love it. I have owned several and they all sound great. Acrylics are very durable and most important, pure goose! I have a Power Maximus to compliment it and a LM-1 on the way! I should be set for anywhere you can hunt them and for any sub species I encounter.

I just recieved a poly-carb PM-1 last night. It is an excellent call for the money. I have a few custom made acrylic calls and some poly calls from other callmakers and the Zink has no comparison. Better sound and easier to blow than any other poly I have tried and to me as good a sound as my acrylics. Would be a great beginners call before moving on to something more expensive.
Can't wait till my PC-1 Poly-Carb comes in next week.
Please sir, drop the Zink goose call and step away from the dead geese.
DRAKE,
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A LM-1 AND THE 'PARALYZING' VIDEO AND HAVE HAD LITTLE PROBLEM WITH GETTING THE HANG OF THE SHORT REED CALLS. WHAT EVER CALL YOU DECIDE TO BUY THATS UP TO AND YOUR AREA, BUT THE VIDEO WILL SAVE YOU HOURS AND MANY TYLENOL TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT.
MY TWO CENTS...GOOD LUCK!

Drake,
Just as everyone else has said I would go with the SR-1 because it comes with an instructional video. Fred does an awesome job showing the proper way to blow the SR-1. This call is very easy blowing and is great for novice callers.
Which ever call you go with make sure you get a call that comes with an instructional video so you don't start bad habits that will be hard to break later down the road.

Drake,
Everyone made very good points. Like Clay said it is very important to get a strong foundation of correct mechanics. "The worst practice is bad practice." The good thing about the SR-1 and the video is that they are made to go with each other. The video is directed towards the use of the SR-1. The mechanics you learn you can use with any short reed. Whatever you decide make sure you take the time to learn correctly, you will learn quicker in the long run.
Thanks,
