Guys- I have never bothered with after market choke tubes before. I never thought I had a use or a need. BUT, this weekend, I think I saw the light, and should try one. When popping cripples off the water, my shot string was several feet long, while Bretts looked more like a bowling bowl hitting the water at the same range.
I want some opinions on which one to get, and why?
I shoot a Franchi 912 variomax, and for the most part the shots are over decoying birds relitively close... thats why I never bothered before. Thanks guys-

Mark,
Personally I shoot a PatternMaster choke to and love it. I will admit that it may take a time or to to get yourself used to the pattern it shoots. I know of guys that shoot the same PatternMaster choke for everything, from Waterfowl, Upland and even shooting sporting clays. I would check out another thread here on the sight where they comparing PatternMaster to Wad Wizard chokes. Honestly, they are the same choke, with the only difference being that Wad Wizard is not a ported choke. The President of Wad Wizard actually worked with/for PatternMaster. Hope you get the info you are looking for. Good luck and Good Hunting.

Mark,
First you need to get rid of that single shot and get a real gun. Then you can get a good aftermarket choke for it.

I have good luck with a Kicks tube. Packs one heck of a punch. Consistant patterns.

I saw these at BPS. Theyt look similar to Pattermaster but are considerably cheaper. Never used them myself. Considering geeting one though.

I am an engineer and so more research than necessary. Whether it is trying to buy the best golf club (which did't help me) or buying the best accessories for my hobbies. I believe Patternmaster has IT RIGHT on the concept and choke construction. Some sports need some shotstring and some do not. In sporting clays I can use some shotstring and have purchased chokes that do just that: Charlie Boswell at COMP-N-CHOKE/KICKS, is great to do business with= order it one day and it is on you step the next. Bradley Hogan at PUREGOLD makes a nice set. These chokes retard the wad by siphoning the gas in a different direction- but the concept is still retarding the wad. Go to www.gameacc.net (http://www.gameacc.net) and you will see how their concept works. BUT in goose hunting, you need as someone said in this forum 'the bowling ball' effect, and Patternmmaster's concept on holding the wad back makes the most sense if you want/need minimum shot string. I have just purchase their 3 choke set (which consists of short, med, full range) only becuase I really do not understand the 'one chokes fits all concept' except it works; I understand IC->Full, and so based on that I thought the Patternmaster short would take care of the incoming over decoys; the mid would take care of crossing; and the full will take care of those that are decoy shy. Besides I also turkey hunt. Dianne at Patternmaster suggested the "short" for over decoys. Funny thought, the only way i could get the 'mid' choke for my Benelli Nova was to get the complete 3 piece set. These are my thoughts and the bottom line is :"if you want to smack like a bowling ball" then try'em; if you need a little kentucky windage (ala shot string, try pure gold or comp-n-choke/kicks. They porting design differs, but the wad retardation concept seems the same.

I shoot a patternmaster also and love that thing. Blew a goose's head off at about 10 yards backpedaling into the decoys on a pond. Not a pretty sight :D

Guys- Thanks for the info. This is an old post! Since this post, I have traded that gun, bought an X2, and added a pattern master. I love the combo, and it throws one seriously uniform pattern. Everything I hit, I hit hard.
