I never used an aftermarket choke tube for waterfowl hunting, only for turkey. I was wondering if there is any merit to using them. If so, which one is recommended.

iahonkerhunter,

First, welcome to the Avery Message Boards! To answer you question I do think that aftermarket chokes tubes help. I like the types that shorten your shot string as opposed to just tightening your pattern. Examples would be the Patternmaster or Wad Wizzard style choke tubes. You will miss a little more because of the shortening of the shot string but when you hit you hit hard reducing the number of cripples. If you are a pretty good shot you will really see the benefit in these styles of tubes.

iahonkerhunter, Welcome to the Avery messageboard. You will get alot of answers to this question.
First, have you patterned your factory chokes with the loads you hunt with?
How do the patterns look?If you have not, you need to do so before putting out the money on the aftermarket tubes, as some can be quite expensive.
After you do, and you do wish to purchase one, you can look at Patternmaster, Wad Wizard, and Briley makes some as well that are not quite as expensive.

Thank you for your welcoming me. I just purchased a Benelli SBE II. I was told this gun patterns very well, but still wondered what the benefits of a aftermarket choke would be. Thanks again for everyones time and input!!

iahonkerhunter,
Welcome to the Avery messageboard. I feel that there is a advantage to after market chokes. I would agree with JEDJR advice in-regard to patterning the gun. In an ideal world you would have one of each choke tube and the two shot sizes you shoot the most from each shell manufacturer on the market. After a day of shooting paper your choice would be refined and simple. I shoot a .675 Terror choke tube. It patterns great from my Extrema with 2's and BB's. The birds fall harder when hit by it than with other tubes I have used. I have tried the WW and PM but had poor patterns from my Extrema combined with steel moving 1450 fps and faster. I was told by the good folks at WW that the fast stuff doesnt pattern as well from choke types that shorten the shot string. Hope that helps.
