I have been reading adds in waterfowl mags for hevi shot and wondered what your feelings are

DEADLY!!! Its like mixing lead shot with dynamite ;) The only problem with it is, once you shoot it its hard going back.

Hevi Shot is the real deal. Dave's right, if you try it, you'll never go back to anything else.....

I have to agree with Dave and Greg. Hevi-Shot works great. I use #4 and #6 Hevi-Shot on geese and #6 on ducks.

It is deadly, but it aint cheap. If you are a good shot, its a deadly combo.
I shoot steel 95% of the time.
I heard recently that the price of hevi-shot will be going up next year.
Has anyone else heard this?

Hevi-Shot is my go-to load. More importantly to me is that it gives me greater confidence in my shooting...a personal dividend that yields better overall results for me.
Jed...Are you saying that you are a good shooter only 5% of the time? tongue.gif I don't believe it for a second!

Although I am not a pro-staffer....I do have some experience with Hevi-Shot. Hevi-Shot definitely lays the "smack down" on birds. There is an obvious difference in knock down power when compared to steel. It defintiely reduces the number of shots taken as well. I shoot more clean-up rounds using steel than I do with Hevi. With Hevi, clean-up rounds are almost non-existent = you make a decent shot - the bird is DEAD, not crippled and requiring a clean-up round or 2 or 3 or 10.
With all of that said, I shoot steel most of the time - but only because of the price. Although, with the introduction of Hevi-Steel and the other new non-toxics coming out this year - I may try some of those. If I could afford to shoot Hevi - NO DOUBT THAT I WOULD.

Hevi shot is a GREAT load. Just like Rusty said, #4 for geese and #6 for ducks is a can't beat deal! I know it is expensive, but if you compare it to how many times you need to shoot a cripple with steel, it comes out pretty close. Plus if you spend that much on great ammo it will make you learn to shoot better!
Why do we spend high dollars on boats, decoys, trailers, blinds, and all that other gear to kill ducks & geese...yet guys are always trying to get the cheapest shells available  ? I will cut cost somewhere else..not my ammo!
Also works geat on ditch parrots (ask Rob and Rusty) and longbeards!
Thanks for posting..great conversation starter!

I must be having de ja vooooo, I swear I had this coversation with Rambo and Rob in Mack's, I think around the World's? Derek brings up a , very good point, although Ultra Shok did a number on some birds this year for me. But there is no denying that there are sometimes follow ups are needed. Rambo, what happened to that call I was supposed to get? Hope you finished out your season well. I think it has it's applications- just like everything else.

Paul,
What call??? Refresh my memory? Macks was a looong time ago and I had a pretty bad year down here. Canada was awesome in Oct and it went all downhill after that. Still hunted alot and would still do it even if I would of known it was going to suck! I'm so tore up with this I think I nedd to start a focus group called Off Season Waterfowlers Cope Group. I know it is a long name but I think membership would be high!
Man, it's only March 2? AGGGHHHHH!

Now that I know Hevi shot is the right ammo, what specific load is the best for geese and ducks. Do I want a high velocity or the nitro magnum?, 3" OR 3 1/2?!!! All of these options are driving me CRAZY
How do you store all of those full bodies, I have my first dozen and only eight will fit in a two man decoy bag!! HUUUGGHHH How do you transport these puppies!!!

Nick,
Full bodies take up alot of room but they are worth every inch. Your best bet is to invest in a closed trailer, you can transport them and store them in it. If not you can store them by building runners on the garage ceiling that the bottom of the foot base will fit in.
As far as the hevi goes, I prefer 3" 4 shot with a velocity of 1560 fps. The statement "speed kills" stands true for soft and hard shot.

i used some of the T's in hevi-shot this year and they layed the smack down on some of those geese 70 yards and further. just like posted before if your going to invest all of the money into deocys and trailers and blinds and getting there why not spend a little extra money on some good ammo
