As I drove by the lake at my house today I saw the flock out there so I pulled over and got out. They were about 50 yds away.
I started calling, just honks and mur murs. Sort of alternating between a couple of honks then quiet. Then mur mur, then quiet. Did that for about 5 min or so and got them within 40 feet of me behind some bushes.
There was about 10 or 15 in the flock and they all swam over.

Maybe you're just a good caller or they wanted to know what that racket was? :D
Yes they are kinda curious..

I am not to convinced it was the calling as I missed a note or 2. They weren't talking back to me so I didnt get to aggressive on the call. Just honk, quiet, honk, quiet, mur mur, quiet, mur mur. Thye just kept swimming over.

I believe they are very curious. Often times when I am working the dogs at the local lakes, they will swim over to within a couple of yards of the tossed dummy to see what is going on. I could easily see where the old duck tolling method would work.

I strongly believe geese have split personalities. There is the curious dumb park bird then there is the wise alert bird that just left the park to head out of the refuge to feed. When I was younger I hunted a lot by Rochester, MN. I always wanted to try the "park" spread. You know, standing up in the decoys with a wonder wrapper in hand (no bread, do not want to be "baiting"!) All the geese mostly heads up in a semi circle around you.

I think all of the above factors are possible, also my bet is the majority of those birdas are only a few months old this time of year, they have no real reason to be fearful yet.

then hopefully in the first part of the season,
young = dumb = dead in the bag
These locals fly a pattern around here where they will rotate between roosts and feeding and back to my lake
