Hi there, I am in the market for a good goose call. I am looking at either the RNT call by Kelly Powers or the Paralyzer by Fred Zink. If anyone could shed some light on this topic that would be good. I am looking for a call where I can easily do the clucks and really deep moans. Mostly for the Giant Canadas not the cacklers. So I am wondering which one is a deeper sounding call. Also, why are the wood calls cheaper than the other ones. Do the wood ones sound different? Should I not get a wood one? Right now I am using a Primos "the mother" which I am dissapointed in.
Thanks

For a beginner, i would go with a zink sr-1, a good, versatile call, the end-peice on the powers call is a little harder to control because of it's diameter. Wood calls are cheaper because they are cheaper to make, they will give you a goosier sound imo than acrylic, but will not last as long due to splitting from moisture and temp change. If this is your first short-reed, get a good instructional, like shawn stahl's "honker talk" (video), if you get the zink call it comes with "the art of paralyzing" which is one of the best. Hopethis helps.

C.G.B. If your choice of calls is between RNT and a Zink SR-1, I would go with a SR-1.The SR-1 comes with one of the best instructional videos available. A wood call has a mellower sound than the acrylic. I personally like the tone of the maple and bocote.Cocabola is a dense wood with a tone quality close to acrylic. The acrylic is a little crisper and louder in tone. As far as splitting, I have hunted with a maple SR-1 and a cocabola PC-1 for a few seasons and neither call has split. I have sold quite a few wood SR-1's and PC-1's. I have never had a call returned except for reed replacement. The RNT is a good call, but I prefer the SR-1. I like the tone and ease of operation of the SR-1.

Thanks a lot. Your suggestions have helped me very much. I think I have decided on the SR-I, But I am just deciding on the type of wood. I don't think I should have a problem with splitting. I really do want that mellow tone.
Thanks again.

the splitting mostly occurs in softer wood like hedge, if you go with a cocobola, you should be fine, that zink sr-1 in cocobola is a damn fine looking call too which i always a + good luck with whatever you decide.
