Gentlemen,
I'm trying to find the perfect 20ga shotgun for my 5'2", 100lb wife. I'm hoping to find one that will do everything from shooting doves to deer. I'm not wanting to spend an exorbitant amount but want something nice. Any suggestions?

Kyle,

I bought my wife a Youth Model Remington 870 20ga, and she really likes it. her arms aren't really that long so the shorter stock really fit her well, she shoots alot of doves with that thing, and really developed a nice shot. I also like the Benelli Nova youth 20 but they weren't making that gun when I bought hers. Hope this helps.

Kyle- I would look at an auto just for the reduction in recoil, although both guns mentioned above are good, solid guns for a beginner too. Bring her with and let her pick one out!

Got my sisterinlaw a Beretta al 390. But the gun did not fit her. Took it to a custom stock maker. He fitted it to her put a recoil ruducer and a limbsaver pad on it. You don't feel hardley any recoil.

Kyle,

I would recommend a featherlite Remington 1100 LT 20. This gun has been with us for quite some time and it is a pleasure to shoot. My wife enjoys shooting clay targets with it and I will be handing it down to my son next year. Not much recoil, and very dependable..

Fit is everything. If it does not fit her right she will not shoot well and get discouraged. Recoil can be reduced with the lim savor recoil pads but I would stay away from pump styles and go with semi autos as they are simpler to operate and also reduce recoil. Find a retailer with a good selection of guns and a good gunsmith. Wood stocks can be easily cut down to fit her so she can shoot better and enjoy the sport more.

My advise is to take your wife with you when you go to find a gun. This way you will know if the gun has the right fit. By having you both there you can find the right price and she can have the right fit.

Make sure that she is ok using a semi-auto.

My girlfriend, who is not an experienced shooter, is more freaked, ok afraid, of getting her finger caught in the action while loaded than she is of the recoil from the gun. Just something to think about. I also think that a pump is a safer gun for new shooters.

I've made up my mind that I do want to get her a semiauto. I've been thinking of the Franchi, Stoeger, Charles Daly, and other cheaper guns, but I can't get a deer barrel. I've just found in my Waterfowl Hunter magazine the Remington 11-87 youth Sportsman. I want to make sure that the gun that I do choose will shoot 3" for ducks and availability to buy a slug barrel. Thanks for the advice.

Hey don't forget about over/unders. There are several nice light weight twenties out there. My wife shoots a Franchi o/u 20 which is about 5 lbs.!!! I can't shoot it - its too light. Plus a very safe action since it can be manually opened when crossing fences, etc... Works good on most stuff- but probably would suffice on deer...

Not much more than a decent 20 ga, auto and o/u are real reliable.
