Thanks to Dave Carrington, Avery Pro Staff, my pup and I got to "try on for size" the Finisher Dog Blind.

My pup, Jake, fell in love with the dang thing! We simply transferred the "kennel" command and in a few moments, Jake was comfortably waiting his next bumper toss. Here's a sequence where we introduced Jake to the blind... he's just a little older than one year, and this is the first time he's ever seen anything like this (although he "kennels" well...)

Chris Akin, on the left, showing me how easy it is...

Jake is all tucked in ready for a bird!

After a few "in and out" drills... we try it with a hunting scene: (Pay no attention to the little guy with the white arms...)

Away he goes! He returned the bumper to the blind, turned around and stuck his head out for me to take it... ready to go again!

Thanks again for letting us try on the new stuff, Dave! I can't wait to put some meat in the freezer with this setup in the fall!

Great looking dog. I can't wait to get mine sometime in the next year so she'll be ready for the following hunting season. That will be one of the first things I get once I have my own house.

A great trained dog is something to be admired!

I couldn't get Autumn into the blind, but Hammer surely enjoyed it.

Stoney,

Those are some great pics and show how important fundamental training/obedience skills become when later integrated in the field : i.e. "Kennel".

Great pic's Stoney, Matt and Roger. I would like to say thanks to Dave Carrington as well for letting us try out the new Avery gear. I think it's safe to say the "Waterdog Crew" is looking forward to the new K9 Hunting products you all have coming out. Can't wait to use the new Finisher Layout Blind, Flocked Deek's and Dog Blind, what a great set-up. Thanks again Dave...

Stoney:

You said that Jake took to the blind pretty well...My pup is just over a year too, but the kennel is one thing that she hates...Every time that we leave and say kennel we get her hiding under the coffee table...Shes kenneled in the truck and at the house everytime we leave...No once we get her out from the coffee table and grab her collar and say kennel she will guide us over there and go in on her own...Anybody got any ideas...Sorry if I hijacked your thread! :(

LilyDuck,

Is your pup collar conditioned? It should be an easy task to convert "force to pile" to "force to kennel". You could even use a mild ear irritant to get the job done. Make things uncomfortable until the pup responds and "places" where you want him. He'll understand that the discomfort ends when he's in the right location.

As a secondary note, if "kennel" has become a problematic command (like "fetch" can become after conditioned retrieve)... try using "PLACE" for the blind (or any other area, like the boat or platform). Sometimes just changing up the nature of the command (which changes your demeanor and inflection to the dog) is all it takes.

Best of luck!

Way to go Stoneman. Your on the mark!

Lily, hating the kennel may be another word for avoiding the kennel. Once she learns she cannot get out of the inevitable, she'll go in. If she truely hated it, she'd be bucking and clawing all the way to it. Keep up the persistancy and even reward her a little every now and then with a treat if it helps.

Juat make sure it is very clear that the pup understands the command being given. Once you are 110% sure the pup understands the command, then and only then can you "CORRECT" for the disobedience. At no point should you ever correct a dog that does not know what you are asking them to do. This point can not be stressed enough.

Ok now for the original question. The kennel for a dog should be one of its favorite places to be...kind of like your bed! You go there every night and love it! It is a place you feel safe and comfortable. I would try the treat approach first. Give the dog the kennal command...make it exciting. Give pup a treat! You have got to make pup believe this is the great place to be!! If that does not work then I might try the ear method!!

Another idea might be to feed the dog in its crate. This might help him recognize the crate as a good place.
