DATE: September 14th 2004
LOCATION: Oregon
SUNRISE/SUNSET: 6:22 a.m. to 7:24 p.m.
WEATHER: Sunny and clear
TEMPERATURE: Low in the 50's highs in the 70's
WIND: 10 mph west wind
EQUIPMENT USED: Avery Finisher, Avery blind bag, Avery shadowgrass fleece, Avery hat, Avery neck gaiter, Avery camera bag, Greenhead gear full bodies, Greenhead gear canada shells, Flagman flag, Tim grounds super mag goose call, Remington SP 870, Kent Fasteel BB’s
HUNTERS: Eric Strand and crew (4 hunters)
JOURNAL NOTES: I scouted a cut and mowed wheat field the day before we hunted and watched the birds into the field the evening prior. There were a good number of birds in the area and they came into the field in decent sized flights. My partners and I arrived around 4:45 a.m. and went to work brushing the blinds and setting a great looking spread of full bodies and shell decoys. Being able to drive into the field was a nice change and made for a much more relaxed hunt.
We waited until 7:10 a.m. until we saw the first flight of birds and we went from 0 to 17 in less than 10 minutes. Once the birds came off the roost it was extremely fast. Good shooting along with subtle calling made for a great morning that was fast and packed full of action.
I’m definitely learning this season that less can be more when it comes to calling early season honkers when you’re hunting on the X.
Once again our Avery finishers and Greenhead gear decoys proved fatal to more Oregon early season honkers and we were able to kill 17 geese by 7:20 in the morning.
