JOURNAL NOTES: Opening of rifle deer in our part of the state. I sat in my stand with expectations of heavy deer traffic. Private land I hunt bordered by two public areas. By 9:30 a.m. heavy winds convinced me to leave my stand, had only seen one doe. I should be duck hunting and that’s where I’m headed. Just my dog Saige and I on this afternoon hunt. I like that occasionally. Mallard hole had shoreline ice but rest wide open. Threw out about 20 dekes and sat back. Didn’t see many ducks, probably about 50 total, but had my five greenheads by 4:30 p.m. They decoyed perfectly into my established hole. Canada geese by the hundreds packed into my lake some 400 yards north of my location. North shore of lake covered by standing and resting geese. They had got themselves out of the wind. Deer hunters spooked them off twice and the second time for good. Major snow goose migration during the day. Overnight temperatures and continued cold made this the last hunt on this pond for the year.
