Who would ever think that, waterfowl calling and or waterfowl hunting would be a topic for a talk radio show for a Saturday morning? Well it was, on A.M. Radio station 680 WCBM located in Baltimore, Maryland. Avery Pro-staffers, Mark Hoke, Jason Connellee, and Rusty Hallock were featured guests for the show. For some of you who didn’t catch the show, it was aired August 13, at 6:00 a.m. The host was Allan Ellis, promotions manager for the local Bass Pro-Shop store had a litany of questions for the Pro-Staff members. Topics such as Maryland resident goose seasons, contest calling, recipes, and field calling techniques were discussed.

This being the prelude of the up-coming season, a lot of discussion was focused on “early resident” tactics. Mark Hoke preformed an excellent job on explaining the phases the geese go through and are going through this time of year. He touched on how the parent geese introduce the young geese into socialization and the skills they will need to learn in order to survive on their own. Both Rusty and Jason described how decoy placement and proper calling will increase your success rate. They also covered when you should call for geese and when not to call. They covered importance of flagging, and the key role of scouting. How it will either make a memorable hunt for the photo album, or a lousy hunt. “Doing your Homework”, as Jason Connellee says, is just as important as the decoys, calls, and camouflage that we use day in to day out.

While all three men are active members of Avery’s Pro-Staff team, they are also members of Fred Zink’s Pro-Staff as well. Rusty Hallock, being the Avery Flyway Manager, also gave a brief discussion on decoys and how they have evolved through the years. The Pro-Staffers discussed how with the decoys of this era, how detail oriented they are namely Avery’s line-up, that fewer are needed in the field to achieve the same success that would have taken twice as many in the past.

Overall, it was a great talk session about things that they have a passion or obsession for.

Enjoy,
