Photo of GHG Fullbody Canadas on South Dakota Waterfowl Access Guide taken by Avery Pro-Staffer Tyson Keller

September 29, 2005

This photo was taken near a state public hunting area near Pierre, South Dakota. Within the area, our local game wardens patrol heavily during the waterfowl season. Within my hunting activities, our counties game wardens and Game Fish and Parks individuals checked me quite often.

During my time spent hunting, I developed a relationship with one of the State’s individuals involved with South Dakota’s waterfowl access, and also the publications that go along with it.

After some time spent chatting about hunting, I mentioned that I had a passion to photograph while afield. I told him that my primary focus was to capture moments in the field for my memories, and also collect images for Avery Outdoors.

Through time, I showed numerous photos to the individual involved with the Game and Fish department. During the end of the season, I asked how the State GF&P went about selecting photos for the publications.

I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to promote South Dakota’s hunting opportunity, Avery, and also myself. He said that there was no “professional” process involved, and that the committee selected photos that depicted a state of emotion of what South Dakota and the GF&P could offer.

The Waterfowl Access Guide booklets focus specifically on decoy hunting strategies. For publications of this purpose, the photos were not to portray piles of harvested waterfowl, but to illustrate the action involved while hunting over decoys.

A photo near some of the best waterfowl hunting areas along the central flyway, over a spread of the best decoys in my opinion (and the opinion GF&P individuals) would be exactly what the publication would be looking for.

Well it looks like Tyson's hard work and photographic skills have paid off for him.

Congrats Tyson!
