The first annual Cabelas Youth Retriever Day was held in Fort Worth, Texas on the morning of 8-27-2005. Over 125 adults and kids braved the Texas heat to make this a great event. Even more amazing is that over 70 dogs showed up to show their skills at retrieving on land and in the water!!! This included labs of all color, many pointers & setters, and even a Drahthaar.

The day started off by signing up kids and their dogs for their retrieves. Signing up would put their name in a raffle bucket ( Cabelas bag ) for many prizes that included dog e-collars and an Avery Youth Finisher!

The kids started lining up and one after another threw dummies into the water or on the land area for the dogs to show their stuff. Many kids ran multiple dogs and all did well.

One girl especially did well with her young black female on a long retrieve. She was very professional and really knew how to handle her dog.

In the middle of the event was Rody Best, and his Avery Team Waterdog Dogs Jazz and Buzz. Rody Best is the Director of Training for Triple Crown's Retriever Division.

Rody is a top graduate of Triple Crown Academy for Professional Dog Trainers, he is also a certified professional trainer and behavior specialist and has a complete education in the science behind dog training and behavior. He took time out of his busy schedule to join in the event by doing a short seminar on retrieving and how to handle your dog. Buzz did a fantastic job on three marks, a diversion and a blind retrieve out of his Finisher Dog Blind! We hope he joins us every year and what a great addition to the Avery Pro Staff.

The highlight for sure was a physically challenged boy who ran his own dog. I hate it that I did not write his name down but I’m making it a mission to find out. He stepped up to the line and had a small seizure. He paused and said slowly….” I’m going to try and do this right sir”. He then walked back to the end of the line to wait his turn again. As he came back up it went with out a glitch. He threw the dummy, sent his dog, and took back the bumper to hand! Well, by this time there was not a dry eye in the crowd and it was an awesome site to see. His mother came up to Les Tucker (ASM Fine Gun Room, Cabelas FW, die hard waterfowler, and Event Coordinator ) in the parking lot in tears to say thanks for putting this event on. It was an emotional moment he will not forget. What an inspirational little boy he was and I won’t forget this Cabelas Youth Retriever Day because of him!

Every kid that showed up left with several items from the raffle and all had a great time! Many parents came up to us putting on the event and asked how they could help for next year. It looks like we started a good thing and we strive to do it better each year. Only difference is that the first year is always special and this one will not be the exception!
Special thanks goes out to Cabelas, Avery Outdoors, Les Tucker ( Cabelas FW ASM ), Lance Freeman ( Cabelas, FW Activities Coordinator ), Rody Best, his wife Kristin, and their kids…Dakota, Dylen, and Drake.
I would also like to thank all the families who came out to support us…without them we all would not be in this business!!
