Depth adjustment

OK, another newbie question here. Well, I've decided to get the KG weights and the non-tangle line, but what is the best way to allow for depth adjustment when using these? Will that little slot on some of keels work, or will it cut into the rubber line too much and break it sooner or later? How do you guys do it? I'm guessing that I'll be hunting in a lot of different depths, so that is why I am asking.
