I know with film SLR's you loose one or more f-stops with a teleconverter. Is this true with digital SLR's as well? Anyone have any issues with their digital SLR's while using converters?

Clayton,
You still loose the f/stops. I haven't used one, but my buddy has a 2x he uses all the time. For the right scenerio, he loves it. But says he would buy the proper lens if he could afford that instead. Unfortunately, it comes down to economics.

I use a Canon 1.4x converter on my 500 all the time... Takes the lens from a 500 F4 to a 700 F5.6.... It still produces a nice sharp image... I've hear that when going to the 2x converter the image quality really suffers...

Youre right with the converters.Youll loose a full stop with a 1.4,One and a half with a 1.7 and 2 with a 2.That can kill shutter speed quickly, kill you in low light and more importantly disable some auto focusing systems.Lost of image quality with also arise and be most apparent in inexpensive lenses.I use only a 1.4 when conditions permit.

How about with say the Canon 20D body that has (in effect with it's new digital sensor) a 1.4 converter built in it? Anyone placed a 1.4 on top of that?

Were using 1.4 on top of the natural 1.5 of the digital SLR.My 400mm lenses on my D200 with a 1.4 converter is 840mm,sweet .Only lose 1 stop.

Canon's 20D is actually a 1.6 sensor.... so in effect a 400 lens is actually a 640 lens right on the camera... This is great for zooms but can suck for wide angle lenses... Put a 400 lens on with a 1.4 converter and you will have a 896mm lens... Anything over F5.6 on 20D with a tele converte loses auto focus...

Yep I was afraid that was the case. I don't think I will be able to afford anything less than a f 5.6 lense at this time, so I could not afford the loss of a stop to use a converter. Thanks for the help.
