Here is a widgeon I made up just to see how well it would show up in the field and I have nothing better to do until next season. I didn't put a lot of detail into it since I had to complete it start to finish while our toddler was taking a nap. It is a mallard repainted with a nose job so the bill isn't too long. It is a little darker that the GHG floater widgeons but not too much. The drakes I see around here seem to be closer to this darker shade.

The darker color shows up well in the snow. Probably similar to a black duck, but there aren't black duck around here for thousands of miles.

There is a picture in the snow, where I use my fullbodies most of the time and one in grass for comparision. It is hard to tell with just one decoy, half a dozen would be better. I may go out to a field and see what the birds think, which is really what matters (even though the season is closed). A guy should really have 6-12 widgeon out in a field and see if duck decoy or not for reall test. It does spice up the spread though.

Thats a sweet lookin' widgeon. GHG should definitly make one, along with a FB Blue of Green-Wing Teal (NOW THAT WOULD BE SWEET!) LOL!

A Gant, LOOKS GOOD! Very nice paint job on that decoy. Your the kind of guy I can relate to always thinking about and tweeking things to make them work better for our specific needs. Good job and best of luck, T.J.

A Grant,

That is a very nice retrofit! You will be glad to know that the 2007 hit list already includes a Full Body Wigeon drake (no hen) as well as at least one more full body duck that has yet to determined. My vote is for a Green-Winged Teal drake, but other votes have been cast for a Rester-Style FB Pintail while some of the guys around Avery are sure we need a FB Gadwall. Maybe we should do another reader's poll on this one?

Thanks,

Tom

I was sure a fb widgeon wasn't too far off. I'll be getting some for sure. The way you guys are creating new decoys it was bound to hapen sooner or later.

My vote would be for a rester pintail also in 2007. A greenwing would be cool, but small. Of course it could be oversize and as big as a lifesize mallard.

GHG is going to run out of species, unless you start making mergansers. I'd buy 'em though if they looked good and I am sure they would.

I thought about painting one of these up, but I thought it might be bit over the top. The picture was taken 30 miles from me last week, but not by me unfortunately.

Very nice job! If you finished that during a nap, I would like to see what you can do in a day! I am very excited about the addition of the FB Wigeon in '07. Just another way to add some realism to your set-up.

The idea of a full body wideon is in the works. This is a pretty good rendition of one though. We kill quite a few widgeons on the ice and these full bodies would be perfect for those types of hunts. We have also harvested many of them in the dry fields while mallard hunting. The finished product should be very appealing to the eye and to the ducks.

Good Hunting!

Are there any votes for a FB Pintail - Feeder?

I think all of the mallard and pintail poses should be finished before any other species is made. I would love to see a pintail feeder.

I would like to see a pin feeder but even more i would like to see a resting pin. Even more than that I would LOVE to see a Butt up pintail. I dont knnow if i would buy any feeder, but wouldnt mind having a couple resters and buttups

nope, finish a FB gaddwall and a FB wood duck first. With the wood duck be sure to make a hen.

Thanks.!

What about all the people that hunt ducks in dry fields. It's not going to look very good when you have 3 dozen beautiful GHG pintail fullbodies but all of them are actives, as if there is a predator nearby or they are spooked by something else. This is why I think a FB pintail feeder is needed.

I agree with Dakota Kid. A Pintail Feeder is a must in dry fields. We killed Pintails in dry fields over our FB Mallards. Havinga spread with GHG FB Feeder Pintails = "DEADLY"

I would think that a FB Pintail Feeder or Rester would be received the best. I love the picture of the Eurasian Widgeon. How many of those do you see a year?
