BJ,
Feel free to cut the stakes, but I think that you would be taking away some versatility of the stakes by using them on other decoys. I don't think you will have a problem with the stakes in hard ground in California. You usually do not have much until later in the year up north.

I haven't had any trouble getting them into the ground but I haven't hunted in extreme cold yet. Usually you just have to get through the first inch or so anyway, then it's smooth sailing. UMS works like a champ with my shells.

These stakes work very well. Something you may want to consider with hard or frozen ground is to drill holes in the ground with a cordless drill.

All the motion stakes are not 24". We found that the 18" ones were just too short when you had some high stubble and soft ground. Usually, the 24" can just be pushed into the ground far enough to get the right depth.

I use 24" with no problems.
Just be sure to push from the base and you don't have to worry about breaking them.
Makes a world of diff. with shells vs. on the ground.
