 Got a HS short reed hammer 2 Goose call and trouble blowing it. Once i got it down ok.the geese didn't seem to respond well to as much as the flute. boy can i cluck with the short reed. but they liked the long honker better. Is this just me or the call. and or what other goose calls do you suggest me tring.
What kind of calls are better?.Is short better and are the differences the same with poly vs acrylic? like in duck calls. With so many goose call out there, Whats goose calls do you like? Something easy to blow but not a beginners call.
Thanks so much. you all have been very helpful.

I would recomend the Little Giant by GK calls. Or a Super Mag Polycarb, by tim grounds.

RedBarren,
Short reed calls are the new generation of calls and in my honest opinion they are the best. However, the geese are the real judge! If they weren't responding to your short reed calling it could have been several different things. It's possible that you may have been overcalling. It's also possible that you may need more practice on the call and learning to produce more notes and better sounding notes. It is also very possible that the geese just weren't responsive to the short reed. I've never had that problem yet but I've heard of guys who've put their short reed away for a day and brought out the old flute and had great success. Sometimes different calls may be the ticket.
As far as materials in goose calls it's quite similar to duck calls. In the acrylics your going to get loud, crisp, and goosey sounds. The wood would be the next step down from acrylic which is going to be a shade mellower than the acrylic. Finally you get to the poly calls which produce good sounds, but not as loud as the acrylic.
As for calls, you could get a lot of different answers here and the best thing I can tell you is to go try some calls. Go to Cabela's or another store that will let you blow calls and just try a bunch of them and see what you like. Tuning is a huge part in finding what you like. For example a beginner may want to start out with a light setup and work their way up to a stiffer setup. If your first call is stiff you may have a lot of problems learning to blow a short reed. Personally, I blow Gander Valley Calls and I love them. Very very easy to blow and great for a beginner, yet sufficient for an advanced caller. Hopefully this helps a little bit!

I'd recommend the Poly PC-1 or PM-1 for your introduction into the Zink call line-up. Then progress the SR-1.

Ok picked up a poly PM-1 Goose Call this weekend. just waiting for it to be shipped to me, thanks for the help. But what do you mean by "ringer" call when talking about a power hen duck, .
""This call is not a ringer, but will get down and nasty with the best of them.""

I think he means that it dosen't have the very loud and attention getting high end that some calls do. The loud hails and attention getting calls are at the high end of a call while the quacks and chuckles are at the bottom end.

I really like using the LM-1 and the SR-1 by Zink Calls. They both produce very authentic, goosy sounds. There is no doubt, practice is needed. Once you have the basics down, you will be able to pick things up a lot easier. There are many good instructional DVDs and cds on the market. Zink Calls will also be producing an instructional DVD this season. Keep your eyes out for it.
Good Hunting!
