While my friends and I where out shooting some pics we saw mallard drakes doing some weird things. It looked to me like they where trying to either impress a mate or threat the other drakes but all the drake where doin it....they would puff up their heads then arch their bodys up in a fast motion and make a weird whistle noise. I caught a picture of this...anyone know what it is they are doing and what it is called?

I believe that corresponds to asserting dominance over other birds.

My pet mallard steve does that when hes lookin for some love I think its a way of impressing the hens becouse its not long after eggs start appearing.

I've seen them do that before too....I'm thinking it's just like a turkey strutting.....just for dominance. :)

I can’t decide what’s better… That picture (which I too have never seen before) or the fact that Lybeck has a pet mallard he named Steve!!
