Avery Pro-Staffers and Goose Hunters Help Local Youths

A small group of Ohio goose hunters gathered for a night of fellowship recently at a wild game dinner hosted by Honker Bonker Guide Service at Beckwith Orchards in Kent. While the dinner was the main agenda item, the evening turned into an impromptu fund raising opportunity. John Beckwith (Avery and Zink Calls Pro-Staff) has hosted this event for the past decade, but only in the last few years has he asked for a cash donation at the door. All of the proceeds were then given to a local charity.

Past recipients have included: Hattie Larlham Foundation (severe birth defects and mental retardation), The Center of Hope (local food bank), St. Patrick’s School building fund and others. This year the group was going to donate the funds to the Division of Wildlife for their hunter education program, but things changed prior to the dinner when Beckwith heard of the plight of two local youths suffering with inoperable brain tumors. The group decided unanimously to donate the proceeds to the youngsters; Brian Montgomery, a second grader at St. Patrick’s school and Hallie Durham, an eighth grader at Stanton Middle School. These two youngsters have had to miss out on a lot of things that many of us take for granted. We wanted to help out as best we could, said Beckwith.

He called several folks that he is associated with in the waterfowling industry which included DeWayne Knight-National Sales Manager for Zink Calls, Wayne Radcliffe-Territory Manager for Avery Outdoors, as well as Zink Calls Pro-Staffers Brian Laux and Jeff Shelby and Avery Outdoors Pro-Staffer Bob Chaplin. They all agreed to participate by coming up with some raffle prizes for the dinner. Hearing the trials and tribulations of the two youths, the goose hunters in attendance dug deep into their pockets to purchase raffle tickets for the framed prints, hats, shirts, guided goose hunts, duck and goose calls and other fine prizes. When the prize drawings were completed, the group had raised over $1,000 to be split between the two families. The fundraising was a last minute addition to our annual wild game dinner, and it was great to see the support from those in attendance and those who donated raffle items, Knight said.

We would like to thank Avery Outdoors and Zink Calls for helping to make this evening a big success, and hope to make it bigger and better in the future, added Radcliffe. Beckwith noted several of the goose hunters here tonight traveled several hours to help out with this cause. I have such a high level of respect and appreciation for these guys, and we are already planning for next year.
