It was fine and foggy this morning with no wind, not a lot of ducks around but with our good decoy spread we managed our 45 Mallards before 9am, none of the other pond in our area broke into the double figures!

pic if of Murray and Marcus with some of our bag

It is reasonably mild with temps around 12 to 15 degrees celcius but it will be around freezing to 12 degrees C before long with frosts down to about -10 C .

We have a front going through tonight but will have probally passed by the morning. we are hunting a new pond on a good flight path tomorrow have a bit of a walk in so will take a dozen FBs and a dozen OS floaters each hopfully can do it in one trip, should be interesting though will be a lot more chalenging hunting tomorrow. will try to get a photo??

Wow...to hunt ducks in May...

no we have not baited for a few years now. most the ponds around us were baiting heavily and all it does is unsettle the ducks. so we just use that to our advantage. As I have stated on other forums to many in the USAs disgust that if baiting is legal as it is here in NZ and everyone is doing it there is no advantage so you have to go back to the good basic hunting priniples again much as in when everyone is using spinners there advantage is questionable???? So in the US you have the situation where some hunters can legaly bait with planted crops and they have a huge advantage over all the other hunters where as if all hunters could bait the ducks would get a huge free feed and hunter harvest might not increase at all????

Paul,

I am coming, probably just not until next April. Tracy from Deadeye Dick's said that is the best time to hunt stag.

Thanks,

Rick ...yes the first 2 weeks of April is when our Red Stags Roar (Rut) and is the best time to hunt them. Just make sure you get a real hunt for WILD Stags as most of the hunts for tourists are old farm deer let go in a big paddock, it is just like shooting Daisy the cow!

Leave it to Rick to give up that duck hunting for a Red Stag. I believe I would have to wait until May and try out the waterfowl.

It tis an awesome place. Went there last June to hunt Tahr, Chamois, Stag and some others. Wish I would have hunted more ducks, but I did manage a few Parries. I will be going back. It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, and is great for hiking and just relaxing. The people aremore than friendly and laid back. Wish I was going again this year, airfair is just a little pricey.. and the flight is about a day with layovers.
