On Saturday July 15th, Highland Sportsman Club in Chattanooga, TN hosted their 3rd Annual Kid’s Day. Avery Youth Field Staff member Cody Frazier was on hand to help out with the event. He teamed up with a few guys from the local DU chapter to really promote the waterfowl section of the event. There were many different wildlife organizations represented including: NWTF, DU, TU, RMEF, & TWRA. Each group had their own booth.

Frazier said, “We tried to represent a small goose spread set up using an Avery Finisher blind, a couple GHG Hunter Series Full bodies, and a couple of GHG OS shells on Real Motion stakes. The kids had a ball laying in the blind and coming up out of it like they were shooting real birds.” You can tell from the picture above that this little guy loved it.

There were many other events that the kids were able to participate in. Some included, Fish in a barrel, rope bridge, archery range, rifle range, talk with a pro fisherman, laser shooting gallery, helping to make homemade cobblers in a Dutch-style oven, fly tying, build a birdhouse to keep, and much more.

The club and a local BBQ restaurant provided lunch. After lunch, the kids sat down to listen to a few of the outdoor organizations about conservation and safe ethical hunting.

Next was the time everyone had been waiting for, the calling instruction! Each kid received a turkey call and a duck call donated by local sporting goods retailers. Here are a few pictures of the calling class. Avery Field Staffer Cody Frazier helped local DU Greening Leader Larry Lewis in the duck and goose-calling portion.

Kids then received prizes by answering questions correctly, or making the right sounds on their call. Needless to say the prizes went quick and there will be some happy parents listening to those duck calls at night! Everyone had a great time and said they look forward to next year’s event. Remember to take a kid hunting or fishing every time you have a chance because they are the future of our great sport and tradition that we hold so close to our hearts.
