What size heavy shot for geese? Geese over decoys 20-40 yards. I have two boxes of 3 inch 4s I think that would do it or should i go bigger. What do you guys use.

take em,

I swear by Hevi-Shot and recommend all my customers to shoot it when hunting geese over water because more often than not it stones them dead. I don't shoot it over land because retrieving a wounded bird on land is much easier than in the swamp crawling over down fall and underwater vegetation.

I use 3 1/2" #6 Hevi-Shot anytime I am hunting over water whether I am shooting divers on the coast, tundra swan in the marsh, or swarms of Canada geese in the swamp. I have stoned numerous geese at 50-60 yards in flight with #6 Hevi-Shot using a standard invector choke of modified in my 26" barrell Gold Hunter.

If you shoot only 3" shells you may want to check out another product called Hevi-Steel. It is made by the same people that make Hevi-Shot, Enviro-Metals. They sold marketing rights of Hevi-Shot to Remington when they first started for capital being unsure of how the product would perform. Hevi-Steel comes only in 3" shells with there smallest shot being #4's. The great thing is that they are about half the price of Hevi-Shot and come in a box of 25 versus 10.

Good luck and send us some pictures.

Take UM
I use 3" Hevi #4 for everything. We tend to have a large variety of waterfowl where I hunt and I've found this to be the best all around load. If I did have 31/2" I would probably shoot Hevi #6's as well....more bang for your buck. It has the knock down power for geese and I've really reduced the number of wounded birds I used to have with steel shot.
Good Luck to you this year.

I really like the 4's. Seems to pattern well for me and kill them good. I have shot them with 6's as well and it works fine. I just prefer the 4's!

I liked the B's and 2's. Still smacks them dead with less shot in the meat. Also, the shot is easier to find in the meat! I know I need to work on my head shots.

I have shot them with 3 inch and 3 and a half B's, 2's, 4's, 5's, and 6's.

All had the same effect.... Stone dead birds. At 20 - 40 yards it isn't going to matter much. If you are on em you're on em!

I use 4's for everything. I just change the length of the shells I'm shooting between ducks and geese.

I love this stuff You will be fine with that shot size. I have killed em @ 50 yards with 4s and 6s.

Hevi-Steel is made in 3 1/2" this year in the same size shots.
