Last week central Kansas got a really nice rain ranging from 5 inches in some places to up to 11 inches south of here. This has come at a great time, since the “Bottoms” was almost completely dry with only a small amount of water in the refuge pool 1B. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks operates 19,857 acres as a wildlife management area. To give you an idea of how dry it was 2 years ago my uncle and I hunted in water waist deep. The following year which was last year all the hunting pools where completely dry. It seemed like almost two years since we had a big rain, and during the rain my friend and I just sat out in it and enjoyed it!
I drove through Cheyenne Bottoms this evening it was too late to take pictures but the refuge is filling but the minute. We saw a nice amount of water in the refuge pool 1A which has been try for almost 2 years. There is a nice amount of water in pool 2 and once the refuge is full and as hunting season nears they will drain the water into the hunting pools. Pool 2 has been almost completely cleared of the thick cattails that covered the pool 2-3 years ago allowing a wide open pools of water. I am really excited for what this fall will bring us. I will talk to my buddy who is going out to the bottoms sometime this week to take pictures for his college class to post pictures. I just wanted to pass the good news along! Now all we need to do is add ducks and geese and a few GHG decoys and we will have a ball!!

Zach, I can appreciate your enthusiasm, however. There is still no water and there will not be any birds. To little all to Late. Don't wast your time coming out to central Kansas! ;)

I knew you all got some rain, and as I do 90% of my hunting out that way I am just as excited about it as you are. I have been hunting those pools since the early 90's... 91 92. It has hurt to watch that turn to almost baron desert out there. Can't wait to see it in a couple weeks. It will bring back many fond memories.
