I am wondering how and where you guys hide when hunting sandbars. This sand bar is connected a little island in the middle the river. The problem is the geese are sitting on the sand bar about 60 ft from the island or any good cover how would you guys get to these geese. I was thinking of digging down my power hunter in the sand or suronding my blind with decoys maybe trying to pull them closer to the island.

We killed geese by digging pits in the sand bars a feew years ago during a drought. We used the sand from the pits and piled it around the edge of the pits to give us a little more cover then as you said put decoys around to help break up the egdes. Worked well for us.

Use a layout blind, I would say a power hunter and take the middle bar out in the hood. Take a shovel and dig down a bit to sink the blind in the sand,

Hope this helps

Sandbars are what we hunt for the honkers mostly. The last few seasons we have been fortunate to find islands with some cover on em with the sand bar close enough to hunt. Last year though the geese were using a large bar that had no cover so we dug holes and sat in em to hunt the geese. BUT, this year we are going all layout blinds. Power Hunters, and Ground Force in Field Khaki. I just got my power hunter this weekend and cant wait to see it on the sand its gonna really help us get on those geese that like the open sand and late season ducks that like the "no cover" islands also.

I have seen pictures of Pro-Staffers that spray painted their Finishers and Power Hunters to match the sand bars they were hunting. The spray paint and well placed full bodies was the ticket because they had no cover to work with.

dig your layout blinds down in the sand. If you dig them in they won't stick out as much. This keeps you from being seen in the skyline. Also place some fullbodies or shells around your blinds. works really well. Good luck

This is a good post. I have been wanting to try hunting some of the bars in the Mississippi down here. I guess we need a "sand cover" now!

When I hunt sand bars, I usually use our kayak and bring a big piece of burlap and a small shovel. I put the kayak in as deep of water as I can, but shallow enough to have the bottom still solid on the sand. I'll just throw the burlap over the kayak and start to cover it with sand. It doesnt take much to make it disapear. This year I will have a ground force in FK, and due to low water I will be able to walk out to the bars.

Hey Cody,

I have just the solution for hunting sandbars. Look at the photos below. What I have done is spray painted my Finisher and PowerHunter blinds with a mixture of two "rock" spray paints. It works like a charm. Also, with the new NatGear camo we are offering this year, a person may not have to paint them. I can assure you guys that "sandbar" camo has been more than casually looked into but, we're not there yet.

Doug...that's a great job you did on that blind. I am always impressed by the methods that our Pro-Staffers and message board members come up with to solve a problem and aid their success in the field or storage of equipment, etc.

Thanks for posting up Doug!

Like the guys above said... A shovel and some elbow grease goes a long way.

Doug, that looks great on the dry sand. How well does it stick to the blind? Also, when the sand around you gets wet(rain or higher water) does it still look pretty close?

Jon the stuff is tough. I left out one blind from Nov - January (mouse poop and all) and 95% of the paint was still on. I've been rifling through my photos and I can't find the photos I want. I have 4 photos of the blind in January with half melted snow on the ground (wet sand). We do shovel ours in the best we can, but by Thanksgiving, even though we have open water the bars are usually froze solid expecpt the top 2-4 inches. Here are some photos of the same blind in March while I was out shooting photos of the fullbody pintails (corn field sandy soil). There is a full sun photo and a shade photo. As you can see, with that color scheem you can multi-task conditions.

Yep, I know, I'm an idiot... I camo'd everything but the lens hood.
