I am just wondering what the differences are between the hot buy mallards and the life size mallards besides the size and head positions? Are they made of the same material and have the same type of paint? Any input on this would be helpful.

They are made of the same material and do have the same type of paint. Besides the difference that you mentioned, the HotBuy has a fixed type keel whereas the Life-Size has a 60/40™ SNAP-LOCK® Keel.

If you don't like the extra weight of the keels on the life size, just drill out the sand with a 3/8 inch bit from both ends and then drill a hole through each side of the front within 1 inch of the front of the keel. I did this with mine and saved about 10 pounds on 3 dozen life sized decoys. Packing 10 less pounds on your back is well worth it.

They still right themselves up just fine and with NO MORE than a 2 oz weight max will hold in stiff wind and current.

I found a life size mallard 2 years ago and did this with it. I used it hunting for a season and never ever had a problem with it not righting up when throw or hand dropped from standing or leaning over in a wind.

Too bad they are not made with a water keel design to start with.

we bought some hot buys a few years ago and after being out in the weather a while the paint turned a greenish color.just wondering about this and have kind of avoided the hot buys because of this.they are great rig fillers if that is not a problem anymore.none of my other ghg's have done this.

Was this under the water line or above? I had the same problem with other brands and chalked it up to alge from not drying out completly when stored in a watertight bag. A little soap and cleaned right up.

seemed to be UV type discoloration.
