I was out scouting yesterday and watched a field (cut silage) of 100+ honkers. I noticed that they were coming off a pasture in groups of 10 to 15 birds at a time. When they sat down in the field it was like they all had there own area. There was no X so to speak. There would be a group of 10 birds here and about 100 yards down there would be another 10-15. I have hunted geese in a situation like this one but, there was not as many birds. How would you go about a decoy setup for these birds?

I would place my decoys in family type bunches. At this stage in the year they are still in family groups. Later in the year my spread is in one big group but in the early season I break them into family groups. The geese should come to the sound of your call. Put your decoys in groups of 10-15 and then space them out keeping the groups around 10-15 due to the fact that the geese are doing the same thing. Hope this helps.

i would just set your decoys up normally maybe spread them out a little but i wouldnt worry about it too much, if there coming to the field i would just try to get hidden and get ready to pull the trigger. maybe not put out as many decoys i dont know how many u usually use. good luck.

i had this happen to me last year..and basically try and find a middle ground on where they are and set up in little family groups and the ones that want to come in and the other ones might have there own agenda

Pray for wind! Then you might have a little bit more control on them. I would place the decoys just like you saw the geese. One thing I have learned about scouting is not only finding the geese and seeing how they are feeding but also paying very close attention to how they approach the geese on the ground. A lot of times you can get idea of how they are going to work by watching them land with others. I would place 2-3 family groups all feeding except a decoy or two where you want the birds to land….where the blinds are and I would then definitely place 2-3 family groups walking into the feeding families. This will give you a little more control….as geese approach be more aggressive on the calls and see on they react they might just barrel right in…..but you are probably in bed now dreaming about them anyways……good luck I wish I could join you!

Yup family group the decoys. A good wind wouldn't be bad either to direct their flight path across the spread, so even if they want to pitch in behind you they are still in range!
