A great hatch of local ducks this year. Numbers are BIG, BIG, BIG. Large flocks of pintails to boot!! Two hunters, one duck crazy lab, four dozen mallard FB's and a couple of finishers.
ENJOY!!!

Most of those "hens" you are referring to are actually drakes. This time of year ducks (even the drakes) have very little color on them. This makes it hard for even the most seasoned waterfowler to distenguish between males and females especially at twenty to thirty yards. And, being that the best part of the season for ducks in Canada is from mid September to mid October, most of the ducks that are killed in Canada are in the latter part of the molt.
Looks like yall had a great hunt!

All i can say is i wish i was there to try and choose between the drakes and hte hens. At this point i believe it would be every duck for itself. It has been along summer. Decoyed a few geese Sat. morning bet it's not hte same. Congrats on great hunt.

Cootshooter you are dead on...
The one bull sprig I am holding up was easy to pick out of the flock. The other two ...not so easy. Yes, we did take 2 hen pintails & 2 hen mallards. The rest were all drakes. Not much green on the mallards yet but the white breast and dark throat are quite developed as you can see.
There were a bunch of birds all over us and we had lots of time to pick out and shoot. It was quite cloudy and rainy all morning so we passed on many flocks to try and pick out the drakes.
Much more duck action in the last week than we had all last season!!
I had my eye on a bull sprig with what looked like 3-4 inches of tail on him. Too far away on the first pass and then he was gone.
Next time.....

Awesome hunt!
Field hunting ducks is one of my favorite ways to hunt and its great to see a fellow Canuck having so much success, especially with Pintails!!!
