View Full Version : Heart of a duck hunter - please read!

Long post and only related to duck hunting in that we all have to be alive to do it. Please bear with me because I want to try and save someone's life here with my story.

I am a 40 year old male who doesn't smoke or drink and I have a normal body weight. But I also have Type II diabetes, elevated cholesterol, and my dad had open heart surgery at 61.

All of those put me at risk, right?

Well, on Aug. 14, I went to ER with chest pains - after four hours, told no heart attack, probably GERD, needs to be followed up.

Felt fine the rest of the week, went on a long-planned fly fishing trip to Alaska and spent the week there with no problems. But I had another episode of chest pains coming home at the airport. EMTs checked me out, again, no evidence I was having a cardiac event.

After returning home, on Monday, Aug. 28, I had another episode of chest pains, went to ER, was hospitalized. ER doc said no heart attack, but given my risk factors, he thought I should have a heart cath. Next day, cardio gave me a stress test that turned out "normal" (got up to 180 beats per minute, a full 10 minutes on the 'mill). Upper GI test and sonogram on my gall bladder were also negative. Again, told it was probably GERD, continue taking Nexium twice a day. Attending physician told me, however, that he didn't agree with the cardio, and that given my risk factors, he strongly urged that I get a hearth cath or heart scan.

On Friday, Sept. 1, went to GP and he said given my risk factors, I needed a heart cath and he would push for one the next week (if you're keeping score, that's three out of four doctors saying heart cath, cardio saying no).

On Sunday, Sept. 3, more chest pains. Called different cardiologist, he said go to hospital, get admitted through ER. On Monday, Sept. 4, had heart cath, which revealed four blockages, including one at 90%. On Wednesday, Sept. 6, had four by-pass surgery and am now at home recuperating and adjusting to significant lifestyle changes (including the prospect of little...if any...bowhunting, waterfowling, etc. this fall).

My point? Don't become a statistic - I nearly did. God was gracious to me and allowed me to live to see my family another day. If you have chest pains, seek help, and if necessary, push for a second or third or even a fourth opinion. And don't necessarily accept a "normal stress test" prognosis at face value (they can be wrong).

For the record, I had a complete cardiac work-up two years ago and have had several stress tests in the last decade and NOTHING has ever shown any heart problems. A heart scan or a heart cath would have.

Would appreciate your prayers as I recover.

Thanks,

Lynn Burkhead

Gracious indeed! Good news is that you will heal and return to a full life with a new attitude and outlook. My father had triple by-pass surgery three years ago at 69. the blockage discovered by accident. My dad still travels to Montana every fall and hunts deer and waterfowl with me and his grandsons. You will be back at it. In the meantime enjoy the NHL.

Well it sounds like the Lord has been good to you. IM glad this is the way you found out (even though you had to be so persistant), instead of something worse happening to you!!

Prayers will definitely be sent for you over the next few weeks brother!!

Where in TX do you live?

Get better quick, and try to get out and cut some feathers!!

Stephen,

I live in the Sherman/Denison area just north of Dallas. I am a freelance outdoor writer for several magazines and I also work for ESPNOutdoors.com.

Appreciate your concern, kind words, and prayers (along with those of everyone else).

Again, let me encourage everyone to be pro-active about their health here. I heard this morning of a 43 year old in Texas who died of a heart attack a few days ago. And yesterday, heard of a 44 year old who passed on last week with a heart attack.

Very sobering to me - no matter what kind of physical shape you are in (I was in good shape) or what your diet is, if the genetics are against you, make sure that you are ok and get that second, third, or even fourth opinion.

And if you or someone you love has chest pains or risk factors, be persistent and please get to the bottom of things.

Again, thanks,

Lynn B.

Oh, and yes, the Lord has indeed been good to me.

I am certain that He has spared my life for the time being and I'm very, very grateful to have been able to see the sun come up this morning, to kiss my wife goodbye as she heads off to teach, and to watch my kids go to school.

Life, family, faith, and 'fowling is all very precious - enjoy every second of it!

Have a good recovery and enjoy every day you are given.

I can understand what you've been through, I've had more then my share of rough times lately.

Best of luck, and enjoy time with your family and close ones.

Guys this is good advice. I lost a very good friend/hunting/fishing buddy this past spring to a massive heart attack. He was 36 years young. It really hurts to know he's gone. It's hard to believe, but I still sometimes catch myself thinking I need to call him to line up a hunt. I will surely miss him this fall. :(

Lynn, my thoughts and prayers go out ot you for a speedy and full recovery!! Thanks for raising awareness of this issue.
