Does it work?

Any help is really really appreciated because the shiny little devils didn't really seem to care all that much about the squaking I was doing on the weekend

From my experiance the best call is a mallard call. Wood ducks are the kind of ducks who decoy at early light and then it is mostly pass shooting. Know remember this is my experiance I am not speaking for all the time but the majority of the time where I am here on the east coast.

I've had good luck with a wooden Faulks wood duck squealer call. I hold my finger over the hole and start to blowand then slowly release the finger; sounds real good and the woodies seem to respond well. Of course, I'm hunting a spot they frequent anyway and use a few wood duck decoys, but they seem to react to the call.

remember if your doing it, you don't want to imitate the hens fly calling. You want to mimic her sitting on the water call. From my experience when using wood duck calls, it's all in your hands to break over the call. also woodies will make small squeks just sitting on the water. I'm not really sure what it is but I've tried to mimic it and it seemed to work. Maybe it's their feeding call???? But I blow a primos. Just the experience I have had with them. good luck

Wood duck calls are definitly effective if you know the sounds they make and can reproduce them. They make a high pitched sqeel and a 3 not cadenece that is hard to explain, but if you master it it's deadly.

Around here we just whistle to get thier attention and then let the decoys do the rest.

anyone have some sound files for calling wood ducks?

I did a Google search and found a few. The following is short but has the sound of one flying, followed by the sound of one sitting. The basic difference is:

flying: short low pitched, followed by longer high pitched squeal

sitting: short high pitched, followed by longer low pitched squeal (somewhat)

I hardly ever call Woodies. I try to hunt in an area that they have been using
A LOT. One thing I found with ole' woodrow is that if you don't spoke them, they will return time and time again.

Isn't that right Rob ?
