First post here. I hope my introduction is fine. I am Justin, I live in the heart of the Pacific Flyway and have slowly made my introduction into waterfowling after being raised an archer. Still learning about this whole firearm thing and all that is feathers. I have been running a bicentennial edition 870 the past few years when i haven't borrowed a gun and finally made the leap to my own bangstick this week. I am looking to outfit myself for the local refuges around here. Gonna need a few dozen decoys, some calls and other related accessories.

The GHG hot buy mallards look to be really nice. Good detail and not too heavy. I can't help but wonder why these are $25 whereas others are nearly quadruple the price without looking nearly as detailed. What, if anything, am i sacrificing with these budget priced decoys? I'm skeptical and sorta half expecting decoys that will crack and sink, or have all of the paint flake off of them. Does anyone have any experience with these decoys? How bout any other suggestions as to what I should be looking for or what questions I should be asking. I'm hunting over flooded rice mainly.

You cannot go wrong with the hot buys. I was skeptical at first as well, I bought a dozen just for "filler" decoys, but ended up buying 3 dozen more. That paint holds up well on them, you can't go wrong for the price.

The reason for the cheap cost is because they are basically a way to get GHG decoys in the hands of hunters, to show the quality of the product, and then get them to buy more decoys in the future (That is how far I understand it) I have a dozen hot buys that are the original first year decoys, they have been stored in a standard decoy bag and banged around as much as any other decoy I have ever owned. Even while rubbing against each other in the bag they show very minimal paint wear. You will not be dissapointed in these decoys, for the money and even at twice the price, hot buy decoys are the real deal. The durbaility, paint realism, and body shape make them the best deal on the market hands down.

The only problem I've had with Hot Buys is that the keels break easily when it gets cold, but my group is rough on decoys.

I gotta say for the money you cant go wrong. The body postures the way they ride the water unbeatable. The paint... unreal detail is second to none. For $25.00 to $30.00 dollars how can one go wrong. And even the high dollar decoys get broke when some people abuse them. I treat my decoys like my gun as a tool, If you abuse it it will stop working for you. So get yourself some more hotbuys and tell your hunting buddies not to be so rough on the "tools"

Excellent responses, I appreciate the feedback. So perhaps this is another ridiculously obvious question, but what then is the difference between the "Hot Buy" GHG dekes and the Life Size Series GHG decoys other than the snap lock keel? There has got to be a difference somewhere other than price right?

They're a little smaller and theres only 1 head style. I have a dz. from a while back and they hvae lasted many hunts. The only tip I have is if you get the hot buys get some keel grabber weights or ace anchors because the standard wrap around the head weights dont work to great with the resting style head.

Funny enough, I had the same thought when I was looking at the "Hot Buy" decoys. I've been lurking around here enough and read enough great things about the GHG decoys that I took the "plunge" (if you want to call spending $25.00 a plunge) and picked up my first dozen decoys. I also picked up 100 feet of no-tangle decoy line and a dozen weights...all for less then $60 CAD.

Four days after I ordered them (and that's including a weekend...props to Cabela's on the quick turnaround) my decoys arrived. Wow! :D They look fantastic. I couldn't believe the quality for such a reasonable price. Now I'm just itching to get out this weekend and give them a run. Hoping that I can get into some action and get some pics posted.

Justin

You will be happy with either that you choose. The main differences that are size, keel, head positions, and Drake to Hen ratio. Tim Hudson and I have ran both types in our refuge rigs since they came out and have not had a problem at all.

Good luck

i have 2 doz. hot buys and i have no tangle line and acre decoy anchors(best thing since sliced bread):D , together they make it realistic and easy pick up at the end of a hunt, hope this helps:)

I've had my "hot buys" for around 4 years now and they look as great as they did when I bought them. No cracks, no chips, no problems. For the price and the quality, you can't beat them.

They come in 3 sizes now. Ace decoy weights are a MUST.
