Our opening Day hunt may not be exactly what you think. This year we had seven shooters. We do not decoy or call but instead jump and chase ponds. We have a predetermined list and order of what local pond s we will be going to. This year we went to six ponds.

Before I give you the results of our hunts I will tell you how we set it up. What we do is send two guys around t the far side of the pond and set the other shooters in a U shape on the other side to intercept the lifted ducks.

Our first pond and most successful pond. This is a very large beaver pond with lots of high standing dead trees. On the way in we unfortunately lifted three large flocks, two mallards and one wood ducks. The mallards fled the ponds before were set up but the woddies landed on the far side. I set up on the beaver dam hiding in the tall marsh grass. Then the shooting begin. The two chasers on the far side of the pond fired there shots to lift the ducks and geese. They got three geese but no ducks. Then the ducks came to the shooters. There was a five to ten minute non-stop flight of ducks and geese leaving the pond. My brother and father on my left shot a pair of woodies only. My cousins on my left three woodies. Then it was my turn. It is the first time I got to test my new gun on the real thing. The first duck, a hen woodie, comes straight in. three shots and n duck, I was disgusted with myself. Then I saw the geese. Two flocks of about ten each coming my way. I decide to let three flocks of woodies pass by so I can try the geese. It was a good decision. The first shot I fired drops a goose and the second hits it again to finish it. Then I reload as fast as I can and drop another out of the next flock. I then see two woddies coming in. I shoot the drake on the first shot dropping him. Then I swing on the hen and get my first double of the year. I then finish this pond by dropping a beautiful drake woodie on its way out.

The next two pond s only resulted in four ducks being shot due to the fact some very, very horrible people had went into our ponds before us and lifted the ducks on us. We then went to a few unplanned ponds at my farm to get a few more woddies.

Our end count is five geese and eleven ducks, all woodies. Not one of our best years but still a descent hunt.
