View Full Version : FB Mallard Placement in Goose Spread
Just wondering where you guys place the FB mallards in your goose spread. Last time out, we placed the mallards to the side of the spread so the geese wouldn't have to come in over them. We had the spinners next to blinds so we could turn them off. I was surprised to see the big flocks of mallards actually going to the FB ducks versus the spinners. Would it hurt the geese to have the Mallards in front of the blinds in the main feed area with the geese?

I really don't think so. I tend to mix some of the ducks and geese. There are always ducks feeding with the geese in the fields. Ducks will land right in with the geese. The geese don't seem to mind the mallards too much, especially if there is a lot of food in the area.

We usually mix them in with our geese also.

We usually put the Mallards in the front of the geese. Ducks tend to feed faster than the geese.
Thanks guys, we'll give it a try tomorrow. A lot of mallards out there in the field tonight.

I have learned from the ducks in our area that they prefer to land down wind of other birds/decoys. We have had much better luck doing it this way, the reason behind it I think is that the ducks fear of the birds already settled down to have the urge to rise so the would run into each other. Now geese on the other hand will land anywhere in a spread but for the big flocks its way better to have a landing zone for the number of birds landing.

I like Rick's way of thinking as well, and I like to keep them closest to the blind to get the ducks in tight allowing for multiple shots. Ducks can bug out way faster than any goose.

We had the same setup with ducks and geese on a shoot and most ducks opted for the full body mallards over the spinner. The 2 of us on the one end had all the shooting.
