The Band!

Hunting a good size beaver pond we set up with 3 mallard and 3 wood duck decoys. The pond was flooding out the sides from all the rain we had gotten. Several woodies came through and several gimme shots came up empty handed. Two woodies came zipping by and almost got out without me getting a good shot. It was by far the hardest shot i had yet, id missed all the easy ones. I squeezed out one shot before they crossed the beaver dam. The drake folded dead. He was climbing as he flew so he sailed down back towards the big creek into the woods behind the dam. I sent Costa when the bird hit ground. He took a great line then disappeared into the woods. Moments later he came back crossing the dam with the woodie in his mouth. I was happy just to break the ice and get one in the bag. When he returned and delivered the bird to hand i took it and looked him over. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the band on his leg. I admit i choked up a little bit when I sat back and thought about what just happened.

That right there is what its all about. At that moment everything came together. All the hours we've spent trainigg was worth that one moment we had together. I hope all of ya'll can experience what I was able to with your pups. Dogs are something special! Something as small as a band on a woodie can be as good as a pintail when it happens that perfect!
