From my friend Barry - you make the call - the mallard was 100% normal except for the bill

That is pretty strange, but pretty neat as well. It would fit nicely on the purple headed mallard I posted PICS of in the photo section.

You weren't hunting the cooling ponds at a nuke plant were you?

I've shot a mallard/pintail hybrid and the bill looked just like that.

Thats pretty interesting there! I'd think it be a mallard pintail hybird but the body doesn't show it but nice shot!

Very cool. The bill hints at a pintail/mallard cross but it's all Mallard except for that. The bill is also very similar to a Bluebill but that is a very unlikely hybrid.

I asked Barry for some details about this duck.

It was shot in Alberta by one of his clients. Barry is a Waterfowl Guide with Black Dog Outfitters ( http://www.blackdogoutfitters.ca/) just East of Edmonton. AB.

The day it was shot there were 2 biologists in camp from California. They both confirmed that they have seen this before ( actual birds in hand) and that it is just a strange color phase that the mallards some times get.

The client did take it home to get mounted.

I was thinking that or possibly a widgeon...the drakes have blue bills...but anyway...thats really interesting

Pintails do not have that chestnut/rust on their chest...its a widgeon cross...

That is a pretty interesting looking Mallard, I have a feeling it is a genetic anomoly and not a crossbreeding between species because I think that hybrid birds are unable to reproduce and that duck does not look like a first generation hybrid. A cool looking duck nonetheless!

I have shot two mallard/pintail hybrids and they had a mallard head, with the little swoosh that the pintails have in their neck and they both had sprigs. I got em both mounted, I will see if I can get some picks up on here.
