i know this will seem out of place on the forum but since I will be using this O/U to blast honks over FFD's I thought what the heck. Wanting an O/U to hunt with. I have a few high end models that I just cant make myself put in a boat or layout. I have been looking hard at the new mossberg O/U's-silver and/or onyx reserve-mainly because they are affordable enough that a scratch on em wont cause a stroke!!! Anyone know anything about these guns.....any info is great.
thanks guys

I shoot a Bereta 686 onyx 3 1/2" and have put several thousand rounds through it, shooting clay and feather the last 10 years. These gun's are a real workhorse and you always get your 2 shots guaranteed. They do kick a little with the 3 1/2 in it when you miss,so don't miss. LOL I would highly reccomend this gun to anyone considering it.

I've got the Ruger Red Label with the Hardwoods camo and love it. My buddy sent his Ruger into Tarjac and had it dipped with shadowgrass camo and it is one sweet looki gun.

I've got a Baikal (If I'm not mistaken they are now being imported as the Remington Spartan SPR 310 http://www.remington.com/library/history/firearm_models/shotguns/SPR310.asp) and for the money I am very happy with it.
And I have a Stoeger SxS that is alright and have heard wonderful things about the Stoeger Condor http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/condor.tpl
I've also heard great things about Yildiz Shotguns http://www.yildizshotgun.com/over_and_unders.htm
All of them can be used as a boat paddle when needed.

thanks for all the info guys...I will definitely do some looking at all of those. BTW weatherby I sent my T/C Encore to activecamo (www.activecamo.com) in Houston and they did an excellent job even to the point that on the scope he left the magnifaction numbers, gold ring, and leupold emblem visible. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking at having a gun dipped. here is the encore.....

I have a Baikal as well and I was in the same boat as you, needed/wanted and O/U that I could treat as a work gun. Third season so far and I'm loving it. Swings nicely, its heavy but that cuts down the kick. My only problem with it is that I have had it jam (not break open) when I fire Federal cartridges through it. Definitely not a break the bank gun.
Good luck. Happy new years to everyone.

I use a SXS for ducks. It is real nice since it doesn't break open as far as a O/U. This is very handy in layout blinds or other blinds with limited room.

Don't worry about a scratch on your gun! A gun is a gun it is going to be used and if it gets scratched o well! I have a Kreighoff K-80 with briley ultra lite tubes all that stuff and it is a VERY VERY expensive gun. I use it for competetive skeet and sporting clays shooting and it has been hit with broken targets and I just get over it. It can be repaired! Hell I even shot some mallards this year with it in 410 bore and bismuth. IMO just get out and HUNT!:D

I use a Beretta DU edition O/U, I take good care of it in the field but it still has a couple of little scratches. Get over it, its a gun and whats the point of owning it if you can"t use it. I love using it but sometimes I find myself lacking a shot (I.E, honkers back peddling 10 yards away and your two shots are done before there 20 yards away)haha.

Heck, alot of guys use great guns in the field. Talk to Tackett about it, he is on his second Weatherby Athena....imagine how many cheaper guns he'd have gone through if he'd have gone that route. But, I am a Frugal fellow. I want to find quality without breaking the bank (why I love Avery products) and I can't bring myself to use a $2000 shotgun as a boat oar or to help me break the suction of mud on my waders. I'd love to have a Browning Superposed...but could never bring my self to consume it the way we duck hunters consume our gear.

Don't need an expensive gun to shoot small bore. I have shot geese in the 10 - 12 pound range (doubles) with my Remington Spartan (Baikel) 310's in both 28 guage and .410 this year.
Buy what feels good to you, and points better. Don't worry about anything else.

Ive taken my Browning 425 with 32" bbls for geese before and shot bismuth through it in the dead of winter. I wouldn't throw it around in a duck boat but I wouldn't sweat shooting high end either. In fact I prefer it for doves. Mines about 10 years old and certainly has some nostalgia to it. :)
