Yester day after setting up I went to go hide the truck/trailer. I opened the kennel door (located next to the cab) like I always do, then I go open the tailgate and my Lab jumps down. WELL...............................

This time, for whatever reason he launched after getting out of the dog box. He went over the tailgate and landed on the trailer jack stand, on his belly. He slid off of that over the battery box and onto the ground. He stood up shook and trotted off like nothing happened. Horrified I went over to check him out and 2/3 of the underside of his dog vest were torn badly, but not all the way through. This was only the second time I used a vest on him and I firmly believe it saved his life or at least serious injury.

I have no idea why he did this. We had done it this way literally thousands of time. But....

Lesson #1 Use dog vest all the time
Lesson #2 Lower tailgate before opening dog box

THANK YOU AVERY! I thank you, and my dog thanks you.

Oh yeah, I need a new dog vest!

Glad to hear your boy is doing all right. My lab did a similar trick a few years back, and still has a chipped shoulder to prove it. He never showed signs of being hurt, and the vet said it was less evasive to leave it alone then try and repair it. 3 years later he is still his old self, I just don't let him out of the crate until the tailgate is down.

Thanks for the post.

Glad to hear it did it's job. I've got a couple of older vests that are all tore up from timber, fencing, stalks, ect - things I'm sure would have cut her at some point had she not had her vest on. Definately a good idea to have them wear one.

Rick,

If I remeber correctly it is the old 3mm Tuff. I believe that is right. Can you guys reccomend somewhere to order the new parka?
