What kind of gun do you guys use when you hit the feild or the lake. I've been looking and I find something I want then here things that are bad, then I like a different one and research that and find stuff somebody doesn't like. Alot of money to spend 1000 + for a gun I don't want the wrong one.

At the $1,000+ price range you listed, I'm assuming you're talking about auto-loaders so here goes....

Any gun you look at in that category will have people out there that swear by them and swear against them so take all that you "hear" with a grain of salt. Just like the Ford vs. Chevy debate, you'll find passionate opinions on both sides of the gun debate and they're probably even stronger than those in the truck world!! I personally shoot an SBE II with a 26" barrell and I chose that strictly because of how it FIT me. Go somewhere that carries a number of high end autoloaders and swing them all, learn how they all are broken down and cleaned,etc....then use all that criteria to come up with your decision. The guns I would look at specifically if I were you are: Benelli SBE, Beretta Extrema, and the Winchester SX2/SX3......you'll find the majority of folks on here shoot one of those guns, find the one that YOU like best and go with it....and remember--all of them have Pros and Cons....

Hope this helps you out....

ALL the top brands are good guns.but most people tend to latch on to a certain brand.like winchester and browning i have used and seen these guns used with little to no problems.other people my disagree each gun is differnt.they may not have ben so fortunate with Thea's guns.i have not bean impressed with baneli but a lot of other people have so its hard to tell someone Wat gun is the best.
for me its the sx2.:)
hope i help but doubt i do.

I shoot a Winchester SX2 because it fits me and it's very reliable. The only gun I've shouldered that I might even think about changing to is the new SX3 and thats a maybe - why fix what ain't broke.

SX2 has been a great meat stick, thousands of rounds a year and she has not left me stranded yet.

A shoot a Beretta Extrema 1.

This gun is a war machine and if you clean it once in a while and keep it well oiled, that gun's gonna follow you were ever you go.

I shot about 15 000 rounds in 2 years, target loads, hunting loads, never had a mecanism trouble.

I have only shot one gun in my whole life..........an 870..........I have owned it since I was 16 years old.

4 years ago I stripped it down and put on synthetic stock/forearm and camoed it myself.Put in a Surecycle Magazine kit and shot like it was new again.

I used it for Skeet,Clays and hunting............it is 23 years old this year and has never failed me?????

Well this year it started kicking two shells out of the magazine at a time and jamming....took it to a local gunsmith and the slide bars were wron out.we replaced them and the problem still persisted........well on closer inspection the metal is worn out completely where the bars run and they cannot catch the second shell coming out.........he said he has never seen an 870 worn out like this? I ma going to email Remington alos and see what they say?????

Has anyone else ever seen or heard of this???????

I was down to two shots for most of the hunting season and will be looking at a new gun this summer...........I am leaning towards SBE II or M1......They really seem to fit well.

Kevin makes a great point about checking all of them out and choosing the one YOU like best. More specifically, choose the one that FITS you the best.

I have had a SBE an old M1, the new SBE, a Browning Gold, a SX2, an Xtrema, and others. All of these guns I shot for about a season, then sold them to try the "other guys brand." Everyones opinion is different because our body shapes and how we mount shotguns in a VERY INDIVIDUAL THING. The Beretta's generally come with ALOT of cast and don't seem to fit me right. The Gold was a smooth shooter, but it REALLY HATED the cold and jammed pretty regularly. The SX2 always seemed to "feel" a little clunky to me, although I shot it well. All stock Lengths Of Pull is different as well.

My favorite of the above guns, was the older style Bennelli's like the M1. The new SBE's were great, but man they're spendy. I'm shooting the Franchi Variomax 912 right now. Almost identical look and feel to the "old school" Benelli's and I have had ZERO issues with this gun. ZERO. You can also buy the Franchi's at $700 new rather than $1400. Its a good alternative in my opinion but others may have not has a good luck. Some will not like the SBE, others not the SX2, others will not like the GOLD. It's up to you, really. Pick em all up, buy the one the FITS you not the one people TELL you to buy.

For me though, that Franchi has been EVERY BIT as good as the others (same fit, feel and function) for less money.

I shoot a beretta AL390, but am planning on buying an extrema II here very soon.

I would go with the extrema II.

I use a Supernova (Benelli) simply becasue around here a semi-auto will freeze up on you.

Seriously I hunted in -10 with my Extrema II and did not have a problem,, I doubt you would have trouble in KY if you took care of your gun,, all the guys I hunt with in MN use autos and I feel it might be a bit colder here at times than in Kentucky...I use a Supernova (Benelli) simply becasue around here a semi-auto will freeze up on you.

Today I went to the sporting goods store and played with some of the guns. Talked to a guy behind the counter and I told him I was interested in either the SX3, Extrema 2 or the SBE 2. He didn't talk to highly of winchester, he said that he didn't think they would be making guns anymore before to long. I like the SBE 2 but 1500 is alot to spend on a gun. The Extrema 2 is nice but it doesn't have the high vent. rib on it. My cousin has an M2 and I like that but I'm not for sure if I can spend 1500 on a benelli. I own a Supernova now but want an auto.

SBE II for me. I had an X-2 that I really liked for about a year. It failed time and time again around the year mark, and I went with the SBE II.
Go with what fits you best and what you can afford.

I felt like the SX2 was a cheaper version of the Browning Gold. Felt similar, swings simlar, weighed simlar, equal reliability, and I shot the 2 equally.

The Franchi I am shooting is about identical to the SBE and half the $$. I also shot the Franchi and the SBE better than the others, with half the mechanical problems.

Beretta's fit Beretta guys. That's what I think.

Again, good luck finding the one that FITS YOU.

I haven't heard anyone mention anything about the Mossberg 935. Good gun, will hold 3 1/2 inch shells, and half the price of a Winchester, Benelli, Beretta, Franchi etc. But like the saying "You get what you pay for" might have something to do with this.

I shoot an old SBE 1

My opinion is, if you dont take care of it any gun will jam on you. Take care of your weapon, and it will take care of you.

As far as problems with my SBE, ive had none, ive put over 10,000 rounds through it over 3 skeet seasons and several hunting seasons.

SBE II- Fits me great, lightweight, nice swinging gun, and it's a benelli! Make sure you get one that fits you and that you can adjust the shims for your type of shooting.

I shoot a M1 Benelli. I bought it new a year ago. So far through one season its been a great gun. I also have a 3" Browning Gold that is reliable as heck, as long as its above freezing. When all else fails, I have a Wingmaster that won't. In my 32 years of waterfowling, the most reliable semi-autos I've been associated with have been Benellis. But I've seen issues with them too. Mainly when there's lots of grit blowing around.

Until last fall I shot a variety of 870s over the past 35 years and never had a failure. I picked up a Gold Hunter last fall and really enjoy it! It felt good from the moment I first shouldered it.

Shoot as many different guns you can get your hands on and find the one that just "feels right" for your size and reach. I am convinced proper fit is more important that fancy features when it comes to knocking birds out of the sky.

Remington 870, nothing fancy but she has killed everything from deer to turkeys and everything in between.

I also like a pump because if something does go wrong, I can tear it apart and fix it and then put it back together, unlike most older foreign semi autos there is alot of tiny parts that could get lost or be too small to handle. Theres a old man that lives around here who sells/trades guns, and he said that the only people that could work on the old Benellis was watch makers etc. because they were used to dealing with the little tiny parts and if their wasn't one around you would have to send it back. I don't know if its still true with Benellis, Franchis, etc. Does anyone have any insight on this ?

I LOVE pumps. Benelli Nova. 3 1/2inch max 4 camo...thats what i shoot and like said above if something does go wrong i can just take the gun apart and fix the problem.

I have had for sometime now and never had any problems with it.

Like i say, if you take of the gun the gun will take care of you.

Good luck.

Winchester Super X-3 3.5 inch camo with a 26 inch barrel. Teamed up with an extended PM. I really like that gun. Lighter then my old Super X-2 with less felt recoil. It swings nice and comes up nice for me. It is a great fitting gun for me and fit is everything. Well, the dependability was also very good as well. If the Super X-3 fits you well, I would get it as it is a very good gun.

I shoot a winchester super X2, great gun, I shoot it well, no reliability problems. If you can find one still you can save some serious dough because many are on sale to make way for the X3's

Long story short, the SBE can take major abuse and keep banging day in and day out. I have a buddy who's dog kicked sand down in the action of his SBE. He was in a pit with nothing to clean it out with but a 20 oz. pepsi. He dumped it through and kept on killing geese. True story!
