This year has been the most memorable waterfowl season of my life. We’ve had so many opportunities this year and every one of them has left me with so many lasting memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. After our hunt on Saturday I could not wait to get back into the field Sunday and for the first time all season I laid in bed almost the entire night because I was just so excited and yet so sad that it was actually the last day that my emotions would not let me sleep. The last day of the year was so incredible and even though it was such a bitter sweet day, from a personal stand point it was the best hunt of my life. There where eight of us and we had never limited on anything with more than five guys but I knew with the amount of birds in our area we could make it happen.
We set-up on a clover field the geese have been hammering all year long but the day before and we set two Power Hunters about 3 feet apart and I laid on the ground between them and called and flagged while the first two guys filled their limits.
The geese wouldn’t work close early because of the frost on the ground but once the sun came up we were able to get small flocks of Canada’s up close and personal giving each person great shooting opportunities. We had such a hard time keeping geese out of the decoys it was hard to get people switched in and out of the blinds but we had six guys take their limits before I took a gun in hand. As soon as I did I looked up and three Canada’s were locking up and coming fast I called a few times and they where in my face so fast it was almost as instincts took over and with three shells my Canada goose season was over. My uncle was the last to fill the blind and the morning fight began to slow but still with plenty of geese around it didn’t take long to finish our day before the sun started to thaw our field out. The highlight of the morning was that we had the opportunity to get some great video clips which was ironic to me that the geese where committing so fast and hard that we could get our best video clips on the last day of the year, Isaac did a great job! This has inspired me for next year and we are already taking about putting an epic film together (with Aaron Hitchin’s help of course). Next year it is our goal to shoot more green because we really only duck hunted a dozen times but until next year...
So here it is our last Canada goose hunt of the year in the books. Thanks Avery for all the great gear which has had such a huge impact to our success this year.
Here is one video clip...stay tuned for more...I found out what I was doing wrong before....I was the one with the camera...Issac did a great job all morning long getting great footage...
