I am in the market for a new trailer. I am tired or running my bosses 10 year old silos and will be running a big spread of ffd lessers this year.

I have a Ford Ranger with the 4.0 v6.
I will be using 12 to 14 dozen ffd lessers in six slot bags
6 to 8 power hunters
3 45 gallon tubs with snow goose deks.

I definately want to stay single axle. The fields are very sandy which isn't so bad when its a little wet but very wet or very dry tends to sink trailers quicky

Looking at a 6x12 or 6x14 V-nose with side door and barn doors in the back.

Gas mileage is not so much a problem because I only run 10 to 20 miles to the fields each day.

Any makers to stay away from or recomend?

I would look into an all aluminum trailer to reduce weight, seeing you are pulling it with a Ranger. I have a 6.5x12 w/ V nose made by Featherlite. I have no complaints at all and I have towed it behind a V6 Chevy S10 Blazer once and it wasn't too bad.

Get a tandem axl you wont be sorry... your ranger will be thanking you

I run a 6 by 14 v nose and sometimes wish it was a tandem, they pull nicer and you get twice as much contact area to spread the load over soggy fields. One thing though is that I would not buy a decoy trailer if it wasn't a rear ramp door, saves you all that stepping up in the morning and afternoon and you don't have to bring ramps if you want to haul a 4 wheeler or whatever else. Thats just me though.

Brian--

Last year i got a 6x12 Pace Journey. i couldnt justify buying a higher end, being a TX boy and not goose hunting everyweekend, but it has worked out well for me. I dont run a very big spread. Right now i have 4 doz. lessers, 2 doz, shells, 3 doz. FB ducks, 4 Finishers, and still have lots of room. if i actually organized it, i could still get a 4-wheeler in there. Needless to say i need more decoys....

But we pulled the trailer to Sask. and back this past year, did great!!

Its a single axle, pretty simple, but gets the job done. Moderately priced too! I've got the dealers info if your interested. They have all sizes, colors, other options, etc, and have the best prices that I've found.

Good luck!!

Brain,
What every you do get a V-nose, you will save gas big time, also I right now have a 6 X 12 V-nose and inside I have:

3 Power Hunters,
1 Ground Force,
1 Ground Force Dog,
3 1/2 dozen floating (misc) GHG Duck Decoy's in 12 Slot Bags,
2 dozen FFD Lesser with 6 Slot Lesse/Blue Bags
4 FFD Harvester Packs
2 Dozen Life-Size Goose Floaters in 6 Slot-Bags,
1 dozen Over-Sized FFD Shells.

With a ton of room grow. So I don't know how big your FFD Lesser rig is going to be but I hope this helps you.

i agree with going with a v-nose. I wish i would have had that option when i bought mine, sure would be saving money on the longer trips! Go with as big as you can afford and your truck can handle...you mentioned a 12 and a 14...i'd go with the 14...it may seem like more than you need right now, but trust me, you'll love having room to grow, we sure have!

Brian,

You've already received a lot of great information. The trailer combination I decided to go with after talking David Rearicks ear off about it was the aluminum v.s. steel trailer option on a trailer. I decided to go with the all aluminum trailer to help save some weight, limited rust factor, and possible resale value on the trailer I got. It's 7x16 w/ 30" v-nose and I chose to get the ramp door on my trailer. I plan on adding some sort of grips for the ramp to help in icy or muddy conditions to help make it a bit safer but I will definitely be hauling an ATV in it. I also went with about as big a trailer as I thought I would ever need that way I didn't have to upgrade later and try and sell the one I had. I also didn't want to have to worry about how everything came in and came out when it was time to setup or pickup.

Whatever you choose make sure its what you want and can afford.

Nick

From the sounds of it a 6x12' trailer would definitely do the job for you with the stack method of storage. I do agree that if you go bigger go dual axle, it will really make a difference when you are towing it. I also agree with what the other guys have said, buy aluminum. The headaches and weight you save down the road will pay you back double what it costs to upgrade. This holds especially true since you will be pulling it with a Ranger. I can't imagine pulling a steel trailer behind even my full size truck on long hauls. It is already heavy when loaded and I start out 1000 lbs lighter.

Brian,
I have just spent the last month or so looking at new trailers. Here is my opinion and what I ended up going with. A 6' wide trailer will pull best behind your Ranger, and a 6x12 is a good option. However, at about $100 a foot extra, you can get a 6x14 for only $200 more. Also, add the wedge nose for a little extra room with very little weight. I pondered the steel vs aluminum for quite a while, and while aluminum trailers are great and last forever the price was about $1500 more for the same trailer. The aluminum trailer was about 125 lbs lighter. This steel trailer weighs 1400 lbs. I don't know about you, but I pull mine for about 4 months and the rest of the time it is stored inside in MN, and I know you don't have the problems with salt in TX.
I ended up going with the United 6x14 with a 24" V nose. Here are the pics, and the trailer was about $3500. It has a ramp rear door, side door, jacks, vents, & interior lights. United has a 5 year warranty as well. www.united-trailers.com
From the advice of another pro-staffer with the same size trailer, he loads a Quad with 8 Dozen FFDs + blinds and gear. He did say that he could fit well over 15 dozen in bags without the Quad.

Good luck in your decision.
