This is a true story about a friend of mine who was mauled by a bear last week. I have fished next to Lynn while guiding for the last 9 years and even taught his son while doing my student teaching. They are a true Alaskan family, Lynn, 43, was born and raised here, owns the family fishing guide service in the summer and is a hunting guide and trapper in the fall. He has a great family, his son Levi, is 22 or so and runs the halibut boat, his daughter Amanda, 20, runs a salmon river boat, and son Hunter, 12 or so, is the deckhand on the halibut boat and easily out-fishes fully grown men, his wife Mary, runs the business while everyone is out fishing.
Lynn was out hunting brown bears last week and ran into an unexpected one. Luckily he survived, being prepared paid off. I heard he was out of the hospital now. Here is the story written by the Anchorage Daily News. It is a must read!!!

I hope your friends makes a complete recovery.
Adam,
Is the weather starting to break there now, I've gotta come up in about a month to prep the boat for sockeyes and I'm hoping its not all that snow covered when I get there?

I am with Wayner on this one for sure. I would take my chances over a goose or duck than a bear any day. Tell him that we want him to be careful next time.
Good Hunting!

I haven't called Lynn yet, I figure he has enough to worry about, but another guy did and he posted the jist of his conversation with him on an Alaska Forum. I copy and pasted his comments:
Hi all....
After getting an e-mail last night from my brother-in-law in Anchorage about Lynn Keough, I called Lynn's wife this afternoon and asked her how Lynn was doing and she said, "Wait a minute and I'll let him tell you." He related to me pretty much what has been written here on the board. He said when he looked into the den and heard the other bear he knew something bad was going to happen real fast and backed away as fast as he could and grabbed his rifle. He's in great spirits and hopes to be back out on the Kenai River come June. He said he's bruised up pretty bad and his leg, head & hand hurt but was glad the bear didn't use its claws & was really glad the bear wasn't bigger. He shot it thru the left shoulder with his .338 and the bullet exited thru the right hip, leaving a 6" diameter hole. He said he knew it was a fatal shot and it slower the animal down "a bit"...but not much. I told him he'd do anything to get his name in the paper and to ride in a chopper!

Amazing story. It sounds like his friend and a satellite phone saved his life. Not many people have satellite phones today so these guys were well prepared and it saved a life.

Satellite phones are pretty common up here. You can rent them for outting such as this. Most hunting guides have them with out in the bush. As the case here, a true life saver! Not to mention his GPS so he was able to give his exact location for the helecopter. The first link told a good story, the second link gave a better story with an interview with Lynn. Pretty amazing stuff.

A great story of survival and a testament to hunting with GREAT partners!!!
Great perspective Jeremy! We all know the joke about in the event of a bear attack;" I don't have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun my partner", but few of us will ever have to test that theory. (Thankfully!)
