I didn't think they'd ever do it...Now they just need to up the regular season goose limit and we're good.

Agreed. It would be nice to have a 3 bird limit during the regular season.

Good news. I agree. Now they just need to up the goose numbers to a more reasonable level. 5 per day in the early season, 2 in the regular, and 5 in the late just doesn't make much sense. And to think, we are LUCKY to get TWO. For years it was one. That is a tough one to figure out.

Yes!!!! Great news. I also agree, they should have the goose limit at 3 for the regular season.

For the past 2 years the daily bag limit was 4.

up the limit, extend the shooting hours...then they will get the result they are after!!

I think our shooting hours are fine just the way they are...there are too many people that would be busting roosts and send birds out of the state faster and faster.

I would like to see them cancel the early season and let us shoot 4 birds a day during the regular and late goose seasons. If they want to call it a "metro" goose season, then why can't we hunt the water where the geese are staying? They aren't letting us hunt the golf courses...

I agree. Keep the shooting hours. The longer the hours, the shorter the season. My favorite part about the 6 limit is the canvasback from 1 to 2! Lake Christina, here I come!

There are way more geese then ducks in the area, and geese are causing troubles for farmers. Ask any farmer and i'll bet they'll tell you they hate geese but ducks are ok. lets kill more geese

They are to concerened about the EPP population, at least thats what the Feds tell us!! If certain citys have "problem geese" within city limits, they should issue a permit to a select few hunters and let them shoot the birds. I know it has been done and I have requested for it where I live but yet to get it passed through. From what I have heard, golf goures geese are a blast to shoot!!:D

I shoot geese off of three different golf courses here in kansas. They really arent that fun. Most of them by mid season get a funny language and calling them is next to impossible, the rest get very anti-social and only land and feed in there family group. The other problem becomes where they roost and where you hide. Geese get smart fast and there is no covering made for a finisher that looks like a fairway. Geese start to avoid the narrow fair ways and opt for the wider more open spaces. This means you either go out at 10am and try to catch them going from grass to the ponds or you bust them in the roost and screw your season. Just because they look like pets doesnt mean they hunt like them. Imagine if you kicked a dog everyday for 8 or 9 days, you wouldnt get close to that animal ever again. Now imagine being a goose that gets chased by every living human over three foot tall who can swing a golf club. Believe me they have seen it all. Everyone always has advice on how to shoot them but when you are hunting a resident population among houses you have very limited shooting hours and shooting lanes. Its something i do so that i can hang out with friends and eat at the club house afterwards. The only way i have ever found to kill them is to load one end of the main pond with five dozen os floaters and fill the bank with 8 dozen ffd chickens. Keep everything in so tight that they cant land. I go to the decoy covered end of the pond and put the two old men on the other end of the pond with pattern masters and 3.5 "T" shot. I start calling as realistic as i can and when the birds go to land in the other side of the pond because they hate other geese the two old men pound on them. Then i pour a cup of coffee and wait two hours until the wind blows them across the pond. If there is no wind i pour another cup and hope the water isnt as deep as it looks. Either way at least you get some more shooting this year from the looks of it.

I understand the concern for the EPP population. But for those of us who actually hunt in the "metro" it is discouraging early in the year as there are very few small grain or hay fields that lead to early season success. Why call it a "metro" season if a majority of the birds are killed outside of the "metro" area on water and small grain?

That is a great point. I think it comes down to politics. Why not just call it an early season and open it up to an area surrounding the major metros. They tried it here in kansas and it never took off. I know that MN has a totally different residnet population though.

I don't understand the whole EPP thing. I hunt close enough to South Dakota that I can throw a baseball and hit it. They have a longer season and a bigger limit. Drive an hour north and I can be in North Dakota. Longer season, bigger limit. I watch geese leave the powerplant in Milbank South Dakota and come to Minnesota. Apparently, those same geese become EPP geese as they cross the border.... If we need to protect the EPP, then shouldn't every state that has them? It's not like they are a nonmigratory bird that resides ONLY in Minnesota. It is just ridiculous.
In the 70's and 80's in Western Minnesota you couldnt find a goose, but, they let you shoot 2 per day. Now we are COVERED in them, and we shoot one. (Last year they let us shoot 2)
For early season 5 per day. Then close the season a week. (All the giants and lessers must now know to come here) Now open it for a month and shoot one per day. Now close it for a week. (All the giants and lessers must now know to leave) Reopen it and shoot 5 per day. There must not be any EPP's around anymore.
Does anyone not see how goofy that whole deal is? I had a guy from the DNR swear that it was quote "Impossible that I was shooting South Dakota Geese in Minnesota." Hmm... well ok. I guess that force field over Big Stone Lake repels them so they can't leave the state.

Mark, I have been saying that for a long time. You hit the nail on the head, it makes absolutely no sense at all but then again, has anything the MN DNR done in the past made sense?? Not much!! Another good example is going to 4 ducks for 2 years and the going back to 6 when there has been little or no effect on the breeding population. I'm just glad it's finally back to 6!!
Levi, you just give me a heads up when your comming and I will leave a spot for you!!
